Meteorological Office, Wellington, Tuesday, August 13, 4 p.m. General Situation. —Although a weak disturbance is still located east of the Auckland Peninsula, the situation is rapidly coining under the control of a deep depression, which is advancing across the south Tasman Sea. Forecast.—Winds: Moderate easterly to northerly, freshening in the South Island and reaching gale force in exposed positions. A south-westerly change probable in the far south within the next 12 to 24 hours. Seas (New Zealand waters): Becoming rather rough to rough from Cook Strait southward; moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate variable winds in the northern portion, with moderate seas, freshening northerly winds, and rising seas in the southern portion, with a change to south-westerly advancing from the west. Weather: Conditions gradually improving in the Hawke's Bay-Gisborne area; otherwise mainly fair to cloudy, except in western and southern districts of the South Island, where unsettled conditions, with rain, should soon develop. Mild temperatures, but a cold change later in the south. The New Zealand Friends School, St. John's Hill, reports as follows for the 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Hours of sunshine, 3 hours 20 minutes. Rainfall, nil. Maximum temperature, 64deg. Fahr.; minimum temperature, 49deg. Fahr. Sunset to-day, 5.08 p.m. Sunrise to-morrow, 6.44 a.m. Phases of the Moon for August.—New Moon, August 4, 7.39 a.m.; First Quarter, August 10, 11.30 p.m.; Full Moon, August 18, 10.32 a.m.; Last Quarter, August 26, 3.03 p.m.
