SOCCER NOTES

CHARITY CUP DISPLAY BROWN SHIELD CHALLENGE (By “Waverley.”) Giving their best display this season, Technical Old Boys outplayed Eastbrooke on Saturday in every department of the Charity Cup game and despite a great display in goal by Stokes, the past students forwards found the net on eight occasions. The foundation of the winners’ success was the wonderful service given by the half-back line. This was particularly notable in the second spell, when Whiting dropped back and let •Nimmo and Breed do the forcing. Breed played a great game to give one of the best wing-half displays seen in Wanganui for many days. Nimmo also played well and showed a perfect understanding with Boss and Crutchley, * * * ♦ Whiting, though not as spectacular as Nimmo and Breed, by playing the “third back” game enabled them to concentrate on attack. * * * ♦ Patterson and Good again proved their worth by clean kicking and quick tackling. Cameron, in goal, had a light day’s work. In the forward line the whole uniL combined from the start and gave the Eastbrooke defence a torrid time. Boss improves with every game and his display on Saturday was right up to representative standard. Crutchley did a lot of spade work for Boss and scored three goals. Rayner led the line well and distributed the play nicely, scoring two good goals. Kidd seemed to have left his shooting boots at home, but his first goal—the best of the match—showed that he knew where the goal lay. Darby showed a lot of pace on the wing and his crossing was much more accurate.

For Eastbrooke Stokes gave a great display and had no chance with the goals scored against him. Duke also, at full-back, defended well, but the opposing forwards were too fast, and as a result play was seldom far from the Eastbrooke goal. The other Eastbrooke players never got going on attack and they failed to get back and help the defence, who were overworked. * * * ♦ This now leaves the field clear for the Charity Cup final between Athletic and Technical Old Boys. ■ Next Saturday, Wanganui will play its first match in defence of the Brown Shield, when Taranaki will be the challengers. With the establishment of an air base at New Plymouth the game in Taranaki has been given a lift along by prominent players from all over New Zealand, who have gone to Taranaki for training in the Air Force. Given fine weather there should be a record attendance. Only one change has been made in the Wanganui team which won the trophy at Palmerston North last month, C. Carter taking the place of C. Mackie, who is unavailable. Mackie’s withdrawal is a loss to Wanganui as he is possibly the best winger playing in minor association football in New Zealand to-day. If the local

team play as well as they did against Manawatu, however, the Brown Shield should still remain in Wanganui. ♦ ♦ The following is the Wanganui team: R. Stewart (A), K. Patterson (T. 0.8. T. Proudfoot (A) capt., J. Nimmo (T. 0.8. A. Humphries (A), H. Whiting (T. 0.8. C. Carter (A), A. Kidd (A), N. Breed (T. 0.8. J. Kidd (T. 0.8. C. Darby (T. 0.8. Reserves: B. Good (T. 0.8. H. Nimmo (M), L. Rayner (T. 0.8. J. Ross (A). The abbreviations used are: A., Athletic; T. 0.8., Technical Old Boys; M., Marist. Mr. G. H. Bridson will be the manager of the Wanganui team. The Taranaki challengers include five men from the Air Force Training School at Bell Block. The team is as follows: Forwards: Lidbury (Albion), Twaddle (Albion), Tringham (Air Force), Williams (Air Force), Pengelly (Air Force); half-backs, Nicoll (Albion), Hindle (capt., Air Force), Baldwin (Old Boys); backs, Murdock (Old Boys), Hodder (Air Force); goal, Wood (Albion). D. Holder (Albion) will act as reserve. ♦ ♦ • * The Taranaki junior team, which is to meet Wanganui junior team in a curtain-raiser, includes seven New Plymouth High School boys. It is: Forwards: J. Ellison (High School), R. Simpson (High School), E. Meuli (High School), N. Quinlan (Motorua), C. Bremer (High School); halfbacks, A. Inteman (Motorua), K. Lovell (Motorua), L. W. Edwards (High School); backs, S. Holmes (High School), W. Broughton (High School); goal, D. Urquhart (Albion/. Reserve, Keenan (Motorua).
