WANGANUI EAST BRANCH There was a fair attendance at the usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui East branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union held on Thursday, Bth inst. Mrs. Day presided and extended a cordial welcome to all visitors. The devotions were led by Mrs. Ogier, whose subject was “These Things Abide.” After the re-affirmation of the pledge the following temperance fact was read: “In calling alcohol a stimulant we are using a misnomer, for it is one of the most powerful sedatives known.” When all the business had been dealt with the meeting took the form of “Sealed Orders,” several members being asked to take part. A vocal solo was contributed by Mrs. Hoare and a duet by Mesdames Horsley and Conybeer. Short readings were given as follows: Mrs. Black,

“Home Sounds"; Mrs. Walker, “Gardens”; Mrs. Jones, "Little Bits”; Mrs. Carter, “The Best Jewel of All”; Mrs. Conybeer, “Never Despair”; and Mrs. Scott, “Joy Cometh." All these items were much appreciated. The president reminded members that the meeting next month will take the form of a “pay-up” social and all were asked to attend. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Horsley and Jones.
