MAXWELL WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

The August meeting of the Maxwell Women’s Institute was well attended. Miss Hazel Johnson gave a very interesting lecture on the conservation of food. The golden thread (Miss Kane’s letter to members) was read by Mrs. Moss and the motto for the month was given by Mrs. Brown. Invitations were received from Ngarauru and Mosston Institutes to attend their parties. A letter was received asking the members to give some attention to poultry-keeping in order to increase egg production. —The letter was favourably received. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” stall at the September meeting in aid of buying material to make up into clothing for refugees. All women of the district are cordially invited to attend this meeting and help in t’.«ls worthy cause. The points competition for the day was a child’s knitted vest, to be given for refugees. The result was a large parcel of beautifully knitted vests and several jerseys. A display of the work of the Maxwell Guild for refugees

\Vas also made, many garments being ready for sending to the Lady Galway Guild. Competitions for the day resulted: Knitted vest (judged by Miss Johnson), Mrs. Brown 1, Mrs. S. Hughes 2. Miss L. Morrison 3; assortment of biscuits, Miss M. Luty 1, Mrs. C. Darbyshire 2; bowl of spring flowers, Miss E, Morrison 1, Mrs. Morrison 2. An amusing competition was won by Mrs. Mundy. A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with afternoon tea and the National Anthem. Hostesses for September will be Mesdames Laird, Woodley, White and Brown.
