CHRISTMAS PARCELS
NEW ZEALAND TROOPS OVERSEAS PLANS NOW BEING MADE [ Per Press Association. | WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. Now that overseas transport is rather a difficult problem it is essential to plan well ahead, and that is what has been done by the National Patriotic Fund Board with a view of ensuring that every New Zealand soldier, sailor and airman serving abroad will receive a Christmas parcel from this country. The contents of the parcel have been decided on, as follows: Plum pudding (11b.), Christmas cake (lib.), tinned chocolate (Mb.), shortbread or ginger-nuts (approximately lib.), cigarettes or pipe tobacco, a small tin of New Zealand fruit and one handkerchief.
Altogether provision will require to be made for 30,000 parcels. On a pro rata basis Auckland is being asked to supply 9930, Taranaki 1350, Nelson 810, Otago 2790, East Coast. (North Island), 660, Wellington 6090, Westland 600, Southland 1380, Hawke’s Bay 1500, Marlborough 390, and Canterbury 4500. As the board has been advised that it is essential that the Christmas puddings must be specially packed to ensure their successful transport to the other side of the world, the board has asked the provincial patriotic councils to arrange for the making and packing of the puddings from firms who cater for such goods. Many women, no doubt, will regret that this is so, but they will have the opportunity of baking the Christmas cakes a rtf providing other contents of the Christmas parcel.
