GOAL IN SOMALILAND
BRITISH STATEMENT EXHAUSTING ITALIAN SUPPLIES Received Aug. 12, 5.5 p.m. CAIRO, Aug. 1.1. A statement by general headquarters on the position in British Somaliland says: “Our goal is the destruction of the enemy’s forces. It is not our object to defend every inch of soil, but rather to make the enemy use up precious supplies of food, petrol, and ammunition, which he cannot replenish, in what is strategically a wasteful enterprise. Any immediate successes by the enemy in the occupation of parts of the Protectorate will he offset by the necessity of providing food for the population, which is entirely dependent upon Aden for many essential supplies.” To-day's official Cairo communique states that in the western desert patrol work and the reconnaissance of enemy activities continue. In Somaliland contact has not yet been established on the main positions. The situation at Burao and I to the east is normal.
