WAIMARINO ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent.) RAETIHI, Aug. 12. The usual monthly meeting of the council of the Waimarino Acclimatisation Society was held at the society’s rooms on Friday evening. Present wore: Messrs. J. M. Heise (in the chair), W. P. Mead, T. Newton, G. Foster, A. C. Henderson (secretary). The following business was transacted : The chief inspector of Hieries wrote thanking the society for reporting upon the disposal of sawdust at Pope’s sawmill at Raurimu and Mr. Dinwoodie’s mill at Erua. Mr. Henderson was asked to keep the matter of sawdust disposal in the district under observation on behalf of the department. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote relative to the delivering at National Park of 15,000 rainbow trout fry.—Received.— A newspaper report containing the statement that “The acclimatisation societies are the curse of New Zealand” and attributed to Mr. L. W. McCaskell, of the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, came up for discussion. The secretary read a reply he had prepared and sent to Mr. McCaskell, refuting the charges levelled against acclimatisation societies. The secretary’s reply was considered by the meeting and his action and remarks were unanimously endorsed by members. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that Constable J. A. Du Temple, of Raurimu, had been appointed a stamping officer in connection with opossum trapping. A number of letters relative to permits for opossum trapping were dealt with. In answer to one inquirer it was pointed out that royalties on skins must be paid to the stamping officer. D. F. Hobbs (biologist to the Marine Department) asked for details of purchases of ova, sources of supply, numbers and places of liberation, for the years 1935-36-37.—Agreed that these be supplied. It was agreed to purchase 12 cabbage trees for planting in Duncan Street.—Application Is to be made to the Raetihi Borough Council for fencing the trees when planted.
