Meteorological Oliice. Wellington, Monday, August 12. 3 p.m. General Situation.—A disturbance is still located to the north of New Zealand and a deep depression is centred south of Tasmania. Pressure is now falling over the whole area. Forecast.—Winds: South-easterly to easterly prevailing from Marlborough northwards, and north-easterlies in the south; force, mainly moderate or fresh, but strong in some exposed positions about and north of Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough to rough about Cook Strait and on the east coast north of Kaikoura, slight or moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to fresh south-easterly winds in the northern and central portions and northeasterlies in the southern portion; seas moderate. Weather: Fair in Westland. Otago and Southland, but elsewhere cloudy and unsettled, with fairly widespread rain or drizzle, but especially in eastern districts between Tauranga and Christchurch. Temperatures moderate in the north, cool in the south, with some frosts to-night. The New Zealand Friends School, St. John's Hill, reports as follows for the 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Hours of sunshine. 2 hours 40 minutes. Rainfall, trace. Maximum temperature, 67deg.
