FAREWELL TO SOLDIERS
FUNCTION AT WAVERLEY (Own Correspondent.) WAVERLEY, Aug. 12. There was a large attendance at the Waverley Town Hall on Friday evening, when a dance was held to bir farewell to men of the Third Echelon who enlisted in Waverley. Music was supplied by A. Gilmore (piano) and C. Carey (drums). During the evening the following men, Messrs. R. Newland, S. Leith, M. O’Donoghue, C. How and C. Dallison were received on the stage by Mr. J. J. Johnston, chairman of the Town Board, and met with great applause as their names were called. Three other men who were unable to be present, but will receive their gift just the same, were B. Kendall. T. Daly and G. Walker. A presentation was made early in the evening to D. Chamberlain, who had to leave For Auckland. Mr. J. J. Johnston, in his address, said that Waverley citizens were proud of the young men who had patriotically come forward and offered their services in the defence of their King and country. He was sure they would uphold the Waverley district’s traditions. He wished them the best of luck and hoped to see them all back again before very long.
Mr. W. G. Belton (chairman of the Patea County Council) also spoke and said the men had the goodwill and backing of every citizen in Waverley. Mr. T. Bilton, president of the Waverley branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, said he felt proud to be present to say au revoir to the men of the Third Echelon. He also said that the organisation would be pleased to have them as members on their return and assist them back to civil life. Mr. Johnston then called on Mrs. W. McFarlane, president of the Waverley branch of the Red Cross Society, to present each man with a wristlet watch. Mr. G. Mclntyre, on behalf of the staff of the Farmers’ Co-op., made a presentation to Mr. M. O’Donoghue, who worked for this organisation before leaving for camp. Among those present were: Mesdames W.
