ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

HORSES FOR WAVERLEY The weather was perfect at Awapuni on Tuesday morning wfien horses engaged at Waverley were given their semi-final work outs. On the course proper the flags were 36 feet out and the going was good, states the Manawatu Daily Times. Among the earlier workers were Little Briton (W. J. McDowell) and Bass (J. Chaplin) which gave a fine exhibition over five schooling hurdles. There was no jumping after breakfast and among those out exercising was Bryce Street, who does not appear to have suffered any ill effects as the result of his fall on Saturday. Clarion Call (P. Jarvis) was given a working gallop over a mile and aquarter, and he came home solidly in 41 to complete in 2.28 2-5. Hunting Lore (D. Redstone) who is in good order for Waverley, galloped a mile with Colonel Bogey (J. Pratt) and after taking 15 4-5 for the first furlong they continued strongly to cover the full distance in 1.49 3-5, the last five in 1.8 1-5. Old Surrey (P. Rae) worked over six in 1.21, Brazil covered the last three of four in 41 3-5, and Amyas Leigh (Buchanan) sprinted half a mile in 54. All of them could have done better.

Gay Jean (H. Stewart) was just in front of Mick the Millar (S. Waddell) at the end of six in 1.24 3-5, and Sporting Luck (trainer) was against the bit when running five in 1.9. Selkirk (Waddell) and Aurora’s Star (Kilmister) worked well over a mile, Renascor joining in at the five. The time for the full distance was 1.52 and they came home in 40 3-5. Selkirk is improving and the other two should be in good order for the winter season. Lord Plato, a colt by The Greek — Sleeping Beauty, sprinted three in 41, and Francis Drake (B. H. Morris) took 56 for half a mile. Courting (Waddell) sprinted five in 1.7 4-5, the last three in 40 1-5, and Caution (Tattersail) covered six in 1.22, the last three in 39 2-5 and the last five in 1.6. Both appear to be in excellent order for Waverley.

On the plough Sleeveless (Tattersail) ran the last three of six in 40 2-5, finishing strongly.
