One of the most impressive, if plaintive marches ever composed for a brass band is Gaba Tepe, written by Mr. T. Gray, formerly of Wanganui, now of Wellington. It was played at the Maori Memorial Service at Moutoa Gardens, Wanganui, yesterday, by the Wanganui Garrison Band, conducted by Mr. R, Francis, L.R.S.M. The War’s Lighter Side. The teacher was putting the class through a general knowledge test. “Now, children, what race of people live in France?” “The French, sir!” shouted the class. “And what race live in Finland?” “The Finns, sir!” roared the class. “Good. Now tell me, what race of people live in Heligoland?” Dead silence from the puzzled class. Then suddenly from a bright young girl came the answer, “Please, sir, the Hooligans!” Technical College.

Air Mail Closes To-night. The chief postmaster at Wanganui, Mr. A. Pellow, advises that the TransTasman air service connecting with the Empire air services, will begin next week, but, because of censorship, the mail for the inaugural flight will close at the chief post office, Wanganui, at 8 p.m. to-night. The charge for each Joz. is: To Australia sd; to other British countries between Australia and England, Is 6:1. Details of rates to other countries may be obtained at the post office.

Slock Sale Affected. The Anzac Day holiday affected the Wanganui stock sale on Wednesday to a certain extent, mainly because of the fact that killing could not takeplace yesterday at the, abattoirs. Thus butchers were not in the market to the usual extent, many of them'having made' their purchases the previous Wednesday. The procedure adopted at Auckland and Christchurch was to hold the Westfield and Addington sales, respectively, on Tuesday, thus enambling killing to be carried out on the day prior to Anzac Day. Pheasants Raid Gardens. Because of their cheeky habits, pheasants have been a nuisance to gardeners in parts of suburban Auckland, in recent weeks. In Remuera, Kohimarama and other places where they enjoy sanctuary, as many as half a dozen have been seen together attacking autumn vegetables, particularly roots such as potatoes and kumaras. Working vigorously with claws and beak, they quickly find their way down to the mealy tubers, and soon leave little for the patient grower. Though easily frightened away, they persistently return and continue their raids. Besides the older birds, many well-grown spring chickens have taken part in these depredations. Golfers to Assist.

The Fighting Services’ Welfare Fund should reap material benefit from the efforts of Wanganui golfers in aid of the fund. The Wanganui Golf Club, the Wanganui Ladies’ Club and the Fordell Club have already put on “benefit" tournaments for this worthy cause, and between them a sum of approximately £5O has been raised. To-morrow the Castlecliff Club will take up a collection from members, and next Tuesday the Castleclift Ladies’ Golf Club will hold an “open" day, to which players from all clubs are invited. Th,e money from these tournaments is forwarded to the New Zealand Golf Council, which will subsidise the efforts on behalf of Dominion goi*»rs.
