MATRICULATION MARKINGS

T'HE marking of the arithmetic paper for the matriculation examination has been so much at variance with expectations that the whole of the educational system, or else the markingmethods of Mr. K. E. Bullen, Lecturer in Mathematics at the Auckland University, need to be revised. It may be, of course, that it is Mr. Bullen who is right, and that the whole of the teaching- institutions of the Dominion are wrong, but if that is the ease, then it would be as -well for the University Senate Io say so. If, on the other hand, it is Mr. Bullen who is the man out of step, what, is he doing as the lecturer at the Auckland University College'’ If Mi-. Bullen had the qualifications for the task of examiner, and it is to bo assumed that the Senate assured itself that he had, then why is it necessary to revise his markings’ Seeing, however, that the revised results have made the original examiner’s work look ridiculous, why are examinees being asked to pay to have their work correctly marked? Surely the Senate contracted to have the work done properly, and seeing by its conduct the Senate admits that it was not, that body should have the whole of the papers examined by another examiner.
