PREPARING FOR BY-ELECTION

CITY COUNCIL STAFF SUPPLEMENTARY ROLL TO CLOSE SOON Although there is no definite Infor- r mation that there will be a by-election to fill two extraordinary vacancies on the Wanganui City Council, the teturning officer (Mr. C. R. White), must take the necessary steps to make preparation for one. It is essential, for instance, to have the rolls made as up-to-date as possible. It is provided in the Local Elections and Polls Act for the roll to close for a by-election 14 days before the date of such election, not 28, as is the case when rolls are being prepared for the usual municipal elections. It is intended, therefore, to compile a supplementary roll No. 2 to carry the names of those who have qualified for enrolment since the rolls closed for the last municipal election. The new supplementary roll will close at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 14 days before the date of the intended by-election, April 13. Those eligible for enrolment must be 21 years of age, must either be the owner of a freehold property, a rate- . payer, an occupier, or a resident of the city for three months and be of British birth. In the case cf a husband and a wife the qualification of one applies to both, but both must see to it that their names are on the roil. If they do not enrol they cannot vote. So far there is only one nomination in hand, that of Mr. W. Searle who > has been nominated by the Labour Party.
