TAIHAPE SCHOOL COMMITTEE. MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Taihape School Committee was held on Monday evening when Rev. E. T. King presided over an attendance consisting of Messrs. L. H. Haydon, W. Jurgens, A. J. Mortland, C. F. Dunn, W. Berridge, Dr. Hay, J. A. Graham (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. J. C. Whibley. It was left to the secretary and Mr. Mortland to make arrangements regarding a supply of kindling wood for the school. The chairman and members expressed appreciation of the services of the secretary, Mr. Graham, and a motion to this effect was carried. The balance-sheet for the year ending February 29th, 1940, was adopted. The report of the visiting committee was received. The secretary was instructed to make arrangements for procuring the same quantity of coke as last year. The headmaster was authorised to procure the best quality microphone and pick-up for the school radio set. The headmaster was also deputed to proceed with arrangements for the school ball on May 2 and the secretary was instructed to hire the hall for the occasion. It was resolved that the next committee meeting be held on Anril Bth. Dr. Hay and Mr. L. H. Haydon '- ere appointed a visiting committee to report to the next meeting. The meeting passed a resolution I hat the Borough Council be written to Suggesting that it would be a safety measure if the power mower was not used on the Oval during morning and afternoon play intervals owing to the danger of accident to young school children. The Wanganui Education Board wrote stating that it had not yet made an appointment of headmaster of the Taihape District High School and advised that the committee will he consulted in the usual way when -n appointment is contemplated. The secretary- was instructed to inorm the board that the N.Z. Educaion Gazette of January 15. 1940. detinitely advises of Mr. A. W. Tucker's appointment to the position of headmaster of the Taihape District High School, and that elucidation of the card’s letter in connection with the natter would be appreciated. A letter was also received from the roard stating that it had no objection o the secondary school building c«g used as a camp for the MethodBible Class rally at Easter. The headmaster made reference to »he tivic reception held in honour of It. C. Chesnutt of the crew of H.M.S. Achilles, a former pupil of the school. The headmaster's monthly report read as follows; — "Since your committee last met the annual swimming sports have been held and the High School have I ’r.yed their annual cricket and tennis matches with the Ohakune District High School at Ohakune and the Marton District High School here. I have to report that the train ar-

rangements for the visit to Ohakune were not of the best. “On February 29 a farewell morning tea was given to Miss Anderson, infant mistress. Miss Cuming has been appointed relieving infant mistress. Miss McDonald, home science teacrier, was called home at the end of February and her place has been taken by Miss Coombs for the rest of this term. “Mr. R. Sanders has been passed fit for active service and will be leaving this school eany next month. “Last week a serious accident was narrowly averted during the cutting c' the grass in the Oval Domain. A ■small ; ><y came in contact with the mower rnd only his boot saved him from having his feet, severely cut. “The certificate of merit for school environment has again been endorsed for the fifth year in succession. Some 52 pupils have paid for an excursion trip to the Exhibition on April 2. 3 and 4. As our quota is 80 pupils »e have room for some 20 country school pupils. The fee for : the return trip and three days’ board and lodgings amounts to 30s. Any country children eleven years of age or over, wishing to go to the Exhibition should communicate with the headmaster as soon as possible. The staff r.f the school have strongly supported the appeal for money for recreation huts overseas for our forces and a sum of over £l3 has been donated. It will be necessary at this meeting to make some arrangements for the annual school ball on May 2. I wish to apply for the purchase out of funds in hand of a pick-up and microphone for the school radio set.” The report was adopted.
