SOVIET OIL PROGRAMME BEHIND

FEW NEW WELLS OPEND THIS YEAR INDUSTRIAL AND MILITARY INTERESTS. MOSCOW, March 18. The heavy commissariat journal reveals a large lag in the Russian oil programme. The 1940 plan provided lor the operation of 2135 new wells but only 61 were opened in the Baku area in the first two months instead of 97 as planned. There was a similar lag in other regions. The output of the “little Baku” area fell sharply in recent months because only 30 per cent, of the plan for new wells was implemented. The journal declares that the 1940 schedule represents the minimum programe. Industrial and military interests demand that the lag in drilling operations be overcome.
