ST. JOHN’S CLUB
COMPETITION ACTIVITIES REVIEW OF RECENT PLAY As it is some time since the St. John’s Bowling Club competitions were reviewed the position as at March 16 is given below:— Club Fours (as the Dominion Council prefer rink games to be called).— The first round in post section playresulted in wins for Moffatt, McKenzie, Stringer, and Brass, and these will meet in the order named. A Pairs.—ln the sixth round Moffatt beat Bassett, the only two-lifer, and Stone beat R. Armstrong. In the seventh round Moffatt, with C. S. Brown, lead, again beat Bassett (Ormsby lead). Haywood and Stone had the bye. The final is therefore between Moffatt and Stone. B Pairs.—The seventh round draw was F. Smith and Hay and Anderson and G. Smith, Hay losing his first life. The same pair therefore again meet in the final. C Pairs.—Five pairs meet each other in section play. Allen and Davidson have three wins, with one game to play. A. Singles.—ln the seventh round W. Harris beat the two-lifer Broadhead, and Glover beat Kirkwood. In the eighth round Glover beat Harris, Broadhead having the bye. The final is therefore between Glover and Broadhead. B Singles.—ln the seventh round G. Smith beat Guy, who had two lives. Sedon also beat a two-lifer in Easton. In the eighth round Guy beat Easton and Sedon beat G. Smith. Guy and Sedon are the finalists. C Singles.—This is one section of 11 players and the result is much in doubt. Some very fine games have been witnessed. Davidson has 7 wins and 2 losses, Aitken 5 and 3, Hamilton 4 and 3, and Scott 4 and one respectively. The winner will come from this group. Handicap Singles—ln the eighth round D. Armstrong beat Glover, W. D. Harris beat Brass, Ciinkard beat S. J. Smith, and Herd beat W. Pepper, the latter two being the only twolifers. In the ninth round Brass beat Ciinkard and D. Armstrong beat W. Pepper, Herd having the bye. The tenth round will be Herd v. Brass, Armstrong having the bye, the others having had a bye. Ferns.—This is played in two sections of six pairs. In Section A Shaw, Henry, W. Pepper, and Herd won all their five games. In B section the winner cannot be seen yet as not sufficient games have been played. Gordon Pairs—ln the sixth round Ormsby and Ciinkard beat Campbell and Stringer; B. Armstrong and W. Harris beat Baxter and H. S. Harris; Rowling and Benefield beat Colmer and Falconer; Harle and Glover beat F. Pepper and Mackay. In the seventh round Benefield beat W. Harris and Glover beat Ciinkard. Harris and Glover had two lives, Glover having had a bye will have to play either Benefield or Harris, the draw not being made. Supplementary Pairs. —This competition is again a popular one. It is being played in five sections of seven pairs. The only actual section winners so far are Shaw and Kidd in E section, they having won all six games—a good performance. Centre Competitions. Hurn Cup.—After winning ten games in succession Gilbertson, Rowling, Glover, and Benefield lost the Hurn Cup to a Wanganui rink skipped by Engebretsen, the margin being one point only. Benefield’s record of wins
