He had won the youths’ 220 yards in i 24sec. easing up, had just been beaten i in the 100 yards in 10 3-ssec., and was ! competing ’in the hop, step and jump i when, after doing 41ft. 4in. in his j first jump, he struck the far edge of : the pit in his second and broke his ■ left thigh bone. Brown was regarded as the most promising athlete raised in the Buller district, with national possibilities, and was expected to put up new records at the coming Mahar Cup competitions in the Seddon Shield area.
