OBITUARY
MR ADAM SERGEANT. PIONEER OF RACING. ' Mr. Adam Sergeant, who died at New Plymouth, on Monday in his 82nd. year, was born in that town and went to Wanganui at an early age. 1 Later he went to Patea, where he served his apprenticeship in the blacksmith trade under Mr. W. W. Williams. He later established his own : business at Patea and then transferred to Hawera. where he conducted his business for about 20 years. About 10 years ago Mr. Sergeant returned to New Plymouth to live in retirement. Mr. Sergeant was clopsly asociated ! with the turf in South Taranaki over a long period of years. He rode a ! horse named Fair Helen to victory in the first Hawera Handicap, which was held in 1872 on the old racecourse on the site now occupied by King Edward Park. To win the Hawera Handicap i Fair Helen had to win two of three mile heats with 12 stone up, making a very gruelling contest. He also won the last race on Folly. Mr. Sergeant was keenly interested in many other . sports and at one time was an enthusiastic bowler. He is survived by his wife. Mis. T. J. Salmon. Hawera, is a daughter.
