TO ATTEND AUSTRALIAN CONFERENCE
COMMISSIONER OF POLK E ' N.Z. WOMEN FORCE UNDER CONSIDERATION 1 Par Press A%.ccialion. 1 WELLINGTON, July 18. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, will leave for jAustralia at the end of this week to attend the conference of Commissioners of Police to Australian States, which is to open in Brisbane on July 31. In making this announcement to-night, the Minister in charge of the Police Department. Hon. P. Fraser, said that various matters affecting to police administration would be discussed. Similar conferences had been held previously in Australia, the last in Melbourne two years ago. but this would be the first occasion on which New Zealand had been represented. “While in Australia,’’ the Minister said, “Mr. Cummings wiil take the opportunity of visiting Melbourne and Sydney as well as Brisbane and will study the police methods in those cities in respect of the prevention, investigation and detection of crime, as well as organisation and working of the detective and uniform branches of the police forces. Another matter in which the Commissioner will be interested is the organisation and duties of women police in Australian States, in view of the fact that the appointment of women police in New Zealand is now under consideration. Mr. Fraser said that the radio equipment of police patrol cars would also be closely investigated by the Commissioner.
