OPENING OF SEASON SATURDAY’S SCORES CENTURY TO M. GUY In showery weather, which fortunately soon cleared to allow a full afternoon's play, the Wanganui Cricket Association opened its 1938-39 season on Saturday, six teams competing in the senior grade. Highlights of the play were a dashing 115, which included 21 fours and one six, by M. Guy (Technical Old Boys), and the fine performance of W. Joyce (Wanganui) in capturing seven United wickets for 46 runs. For the first series the standard of fielding was surprisingly high, several brilliant catches being features of the afternoon. consists of J. B. Valentine, J. Parks, H. Verity, Wilkinson, D. V. P. Wright, T. W. Goddard, W. R. Hammond (captain), K. Faroes, N. R. D. Yardley, P. A. Gibb, L. E. G. Ames, D. C. S. Compton, W. J. Edrich, L. Hutton and E. Paynter. Hammond, in an interview, said he believed the side was the best England could assemble, and would do its utmost to provide attractive cricket.
LARWOOD LEAVES NOTTS CLUB RELEASED FROM CONTRACT Received Oct. 23, 7.5 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 23. The Notts Club announces that Larwood, at his own request, was released from a contract lasting a further two years owing to knee trouble preventing - him from bowling.
