VALUES MAINTAINED

BUSINESS CONFINED MOSTLY TO AUCTIONS

With the intervention of the Easter holidays, reports the Farmers’ Coop., very few sales of any consequence have been held, but operations are now back to normal, and for the week just ending the majority ol business transacted has been dealt with at the various auction sales, and, as mentioned above, values have been well maintained throughout. In the store sheep section very little trade has been done, as isolated enquiries only are coming to hand. More ewes will be dealt with later on, but it is rather early for buyers, to commit themselves as yet.

Fat lambs have shown an appreciation in values during the week and the transfer schedule now reads as follows:—Primes up to 361b5., Bd, 37/ 421b5., 7’d, over-weight and seconds, 7id, with short at id less.

Freezing ewes and wethers remain practically unchanged. Fat sheep are not over-plentiful and we report a very firm market for this class.

Fat cattle show little change as compared with the previous week. A number of prime Jersey cows find their way to the yards and the butchers fulfil their requirements there. Graziers are still to the fore for good store bullocks and this market is enjoying a ready sale both at auction and by private treaty. Cull cows have constituted the major portion of auctions and some very satisfactory prices are being obtained for these, works’ buyers bidding very freely. The trade with weaner heifers and incalf heifers has quietened considerably. In the case of the former, ruling values at present for top cattle are £4 to £4 ss; for smaller and medium kinds, £3 to £3 10s, with business from outside for in calf heifers practically at a standstill. Trade is confined to local buyers. We quote values for this class from £8 10s to £9 10s.

HUNTERVILLE CATTLE FAIR The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report an entry of 525 head of cattle at the above fixture on Thursday. There was an excellent attendance of outside buyers and a splendid sale resulted. The enquiry for all classes of cattle was keen right throughout the sale and practically the whole yarding was disposed of as follow:- -Forward bullocks, £8 11s to £8 16s; medium do., £7 16s to £8 3s; 2i-year do., £7 7s 6d to £7 13s; smaller do., £5 9s to £6 2s; 20-months S.H. steers, £5 12s; weaner steers, £4 3s to £4 6s; extra prime fat cows, £7 12s to £8 Is; good do., £6 5s to £7 6s; forward do., £4 10s to £5 ss; good store do., £3 10s to £4 3s; medium do., £2 12s to £3; cows with calves at foot, £5 7s; P.A.-S.H. cows, r.w.b., £4 2s 6d; 20-months Hereford heifers, £3 Ils; P.A. weaner heifers, £2 8s to £2 13s; vealers, £3 10s to £4 6s; Jersey hulls, to £5 9s.
