THE WANGANUI SALE

LIGHT ENTRY BUT GOOD CLEARANCE RAIN AFFECTS ATTENDANCE Due to the proximity of the Easter holidays yesterday’s weekly sale attracted only a medium entry in all sections, report the auctioneers, Messrs. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd. Heavy rain falling throughout the day also affected the attendance. The sale was a good, free one with a decided advance in prime ewes. Store sheep were only oddments and sold at late rates. Fat cattle were on a par with last week and a few pens of store cattle sold freely. Pigs and vealers were at late rates, with the exception of heavy porkers, which were slightly easier.

Quotations are as follow:—Prime ewes 19s 6d, 21s sd, fat 16s 6d, 19s, light 14s 3d, 16s; fat wethers 235, 265; light lambs 17s 6d, 19s; small ewe lambs 13s Id, 14s 2d; wether lambs Bs, 13s 3d; aged breeding ewes 12s, fattening ewes 5s 3d, 9s. Cattle: Fat P.A. cows and heifers £6 10s, £B, prime Jersey £5 10s, £6; fat £4 ss, £5 ss; S.H. 3 and 4-year steers £7 6s, £8; 2Ryear P.A. steers £8 4s; 3i-year P.A. heifers £5 15s; 20-month P.A. heifers £5 ss; store Jersey cows £1 15s, £3 Ils; heavy bulls to £6. BULLS SALE

Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report

on their fortnightly sale at Bulls held on Monday last, when a small yarding of sheep and an average yarding of cattle were submitted to auction. There was a good enquiry for all classes of stock, and we report practically a total clearance, values being on a par with the previous sale. Pigs were penned in smaller numbers than usual and prices were well up to late rates. Owing to Anzac Day falling on Monday, 25th instant, our next sale will be held on Wednesday, April 27. The following are some of the realisations:—Fat lambs, 18s 7d; fat wethers, 20s 6d; b.f. lambs, 13s Id; aged ewes, 10s 3d, 14s; fat heifers, £6 10s, £6 17s 6d, £6 18s, £8; fat cows, ex dairy, £5, £5 7s, £5 Bs, £5 17s, £5 18s; store cows, £3 13s; weaner heifers, £2 15s; store pigs, 10s, 12s 6d, 13s, 16s, 16s 6d.

AUTUMN CATTLE FAIR

GOOD CLEARANCE AT FORDELL

The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., submitted a yarding of 2000 head of station-bred cattle which came forward to advertised numbers at the oFrdell autumn cattle fair on Tuesday. Buyers were present from a wide area, the yarding being disposed to purchasers from Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Taranaki, Waverley, and Raetihi districts, with local farmers picking up suitable lots. Hawke’s Bay buyers operated mainly on fat cows and 20-months steers, their limits in most cases being higher than other purchasers, although Waverley buyers made the competition very keen on fat and forward cows, empty heifers and 2a-year steers, oi which they secured their fair share. Weaner catle met with a good demand, with Taranaki, Manawatu and Raetihi buyers operating freely. Practically the whole of the yarding was disposed of under the hammer, and

we can report an excellent clearance. Just on 100 trucks of cattle were forwarded after the sale. As usual in our autumn fair the feature was the drafts of fat cows and fat and forward cows from the Mangamahu, Fordell and Turakina districts. We offered: On account Collins Bros., Mangamahu, 24 fat cows at £7 10s 6d, while 41 forward cows, drafted in suitable lots, made £5 10s, £6 9s 6d and £6 13s. On account of R. Lilburn, Mangamahu, 29 fat P.A. cows, which realised £7 Bs. On account of John McLeay Estate, Turakina Valley, 9 fat Hereford cows, £7 4s. On account of T. Hine, Mangamahu, 10 fat and forward cows, £6 Is. On account of V. J. Bryant, Fordell, 10 fat cows, £7 15s. On account of Mrs Glonn, Fordell, 5 fat Hereford cows, £7 13s. On account McGregor Estate, Turakina, 4 fat Hereford cows, £7 17s. On account of H. C. Addenbrookc, Mangamahu, 18 forward cows, £5 17s. The weaner cattle yarded were of very good quality, some very good linos being yarded. We offered: On account of John McLeay Estate, 42 weaner Hereford steers, which made £5, while 32 medium heifers made £3. On account of J. D. Lourie, Hunterviile, 20 P.A. weaner steers, £4 14s, while the P.A. weaner heifers made £3 2s. On account of Donald McLeay, Turakina Valley, 38 weaner P.A. steers, £4 10s. On account of Mrs Glenn, Fordell, 38 weaner P.A. steers, £4 12s 6d, 28 weaner P.A. heifers, £3 2s 6d. The market was easier for 2-1-year steers, a line of 28 on account of H. ('. Addcnbrooke, Mangamahu, realising £8 Is. On account of Messrs Campion and Co., Ltd., Kauangaroa, 15 2-‘-yeai; Hereford cross steers which made £7 Ils, On account Messrs Montgomerie Bros., Kakalahi, 36 Hereford S.II. cross steers, £7 10s. Twenty-mouths sfoer.s sold well in comparison with tin* 21-year .steers, Illis being, no (loul)l, due Io tin 1 Hawke’s Bay buyers who operated on this class in preference to lhe 2i-year-olds. The top price secured for 20-months steers was £7 3s, lor a line on account of Mrs Baldwin, Turakina Valley, while another line on account of Messis E. Hine and T. C'ollin.s, Mangamahu, realised £6 12s. Empty 2-1-year heifers realised from 15 5s Io £5 16s.
