UNREST IN ABYSSINIA OFFICERS MASSACRED ITALIA?! REPRISALS '.By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 26. The Abyssinian Legation in London issued a statement that violent opposition against Ihe Italian rule, with fighting, prevails in North and North-west Abyssinia. Attempts by Italian motorised flying columns to recapture lost positions met at most with only temporary success. Three battalions of Eritrean troops have deserted, and 5993 Italians and askaris have been killed in engagements in the past two months, and the Abyssinian losses have been equally great. The Abyssinians are masters of the situation in many districts. The statement alleges that following the non-observance of certain pledges, 18 Italian officers were massacred at Debra Markos, the capital of Gojam Province, and that between 30 and 40 Italian ’planes since then have bombed towns and villages of the province daily as a reprisal.
ITALY DENIES STORY
OFFICIAL’S COMMENT. ROME, Jan. 26. Official quarters deny the story from the Abyssinian Legation in London and point out that it coincides with the League meeting at Geneva. They regard it as a manoeuvre to win sympathy and say that Italy controls every part of Ethiopia.
