AWARD FOR AUCKLAND DEFINITION AND WAGES 41 HOURS IN 51 DAYS AUCKLAND, Dec. 27
I The Auckland assistant stevedores, foremen and timekeepers' award was issued by the Arbitration Court on Friday. The principal matters decided were classification, wages and overtime. A memeorandum states that witnesses lor the workers, whose evidence was not seriously challenged. I deposed that they would pre- i [er lower wages with overtime, and lhe majority of the Court felt bound to act on lite weight of evidence. "I disagree with the definition ' adopted and the rales of wages • fixed,” stated Mr W. Cecil I’iime, em plovers' member of the Court, in u dissenting opinion. “The result of the decision will be to bring under the award men who are responsible for the carrying out of lhe werk, and who will largely control the amount of overtime worked both by themselves and the workers under their control. Such a state of affairs cannot be other than unsatisfactory,” I Definition and Wages. j The definition and ’ales of pay for a 44-hour week are as iollows:—Assistant stevedore, employee working immediately under a marine superintendent, manager, master stevedore or wharfinger, principally supervising handling of cargo, £7 ss; senior foreman’s duty, and who may act. as assistant stevedore, and if required engage labour, £6 17s 6d: foreman, employee working under a superior, in charge oi gangs handling cargo, and who may be required to work in the gear shed, £6 10s; timekeeper, employee who engages labour, and keeps the lirr.e of any job or ship in connection with the handling oi cargo, £6 6s. I The 44 hours, exclusive of meal . hours, are to be worked between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday to Friday, and between 8 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday, provided that a senior foreman required to be on duly not earlier than half an hour before starting-time io arrange work on a ’ vessel or labour on the wharf, and I half an houi after the job to discharge labour, shall not count the I time as overtime. Holiday Rates. i Work don? on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Anzac Day and Sundays shall be paid for at double rates, and on New Year's Day, Anniversary Day, Easter Monday, Sovereign's Birthday, Labour Day and Boxing Day at lime and a half rates, with a minimum of four hours pay for each day. Work done by a casual foreman between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., 12 noon and 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. and 11 p m., when work is continued after midnight, shall be paid at double rates. Except as otherwise provided, all overtime shall be paixl for at 3s 9d an hour, with 6d an hour extra for work in freezing chambers. Foremen stevedores uho are instructed to proceed to out ports shall receive 10s a day in addition to their weekly wage, and must be provided with meals, first-class fares and sleeping accommodation.
