AWAPUNI TO-DAY MANAWATU RACING CLUB MIDSUMMER MEETING REVIEW OF FIELDS All roads throughout the big district from which the Manawatu Racing Club draws its patronage will lead to Awapuni to-day, to-morrow and Thursday for the midsummer meeting, ana indications are that it will be one of the most successful meetings in the club’s history, lhe course and its surroundings lend themselves admirably to a carnival race meeting, and the going should be m splendid order. Tne betting at Awapuni is on the single-pool system, and the electric totalisator should ensure that all investments will be handled. The opening event, the Maiden Plate, has a very large Held considering the fact that there are so many other meetings on. The issue appears \ery open, tor there is no really outstanding contestant as is frequently the case. Gold Ballad, Haupongi, Noisy Night, Twilight Song, Ana, Havana Princess, Mob Rule, Quexona and Scarf Dance appear to comprise the possibles, and it is on the cards that Haupongi, Aria and Mob Rule will be the elect of the public. Instead of the hurdle race there will be the Tokomaru Highweight, with halt a dozen engaged over the ten furlongs. Form points to Hunting Queen and Beau Gahante, with Red Sun also likely to run a good 1 at -c. The hack distance event, the Tararua Handicap, comes early in the day, and it is fairly certain that the Held of twelve will provide an excellent race. Siegmund appears to have plenty of weight, ana among lhe remaining contestants Wananga, Lustral and Charade read best. The Manawatu Cup generally provides a wonderfully good contest and to-day s field appears to be just about

as even as could be got together at this stage of the season. Catalogue has topweight but he might be lound playing a more pi eminent part over a shorter distance. Master Briefly is an outstanding candidate from Auckland, where he has won many good races, including the principal event at Te Aroha on two occasions. Hunting Cat is a previous winner 01 this race, but he may not be yet iullx recovered from his recent setback. iJng Rey has won some good tenlurlong races and is back to his best. Hazooi has been a shade unlucky, so ae may not appeal. Lowen berg, one of the unlucky runners last year, when Spiral won, may have a bettei passage to-day. Tiger Gain, winner lour years ago, seems well placed to repeat, judging by his Feilding form. Sur.ec would need to have the race run just to suit him, and that he is not likely to get in this big Held. Big uuok does not appeal as much as does Gay Hunter, who looks like developing into one of the best recruits to open company. Legatee should run a decent race, but the pair on a lower mark that appeal most are Brazen King and The Bigot. Brazen King was narrowly beaten at Feilding and he failed at Otaki, but the latter display may be overlooked. The BigoU is bred to stay, and he has won his way out of hacks in good style. Even Terry and Round Score must be given a good chance. Three that may be well backed are Master Brierly, The Bigot and Brazen King. The dozen youngsters in the Nursery Handicap provide a large field lor an Awapuni summer juvenile lace. Rarotonga has the best credentials and should be the favourite, with Brazil (Pombal—Episode) and Dissipation his most dangerous opponents. The Gillies Handicap finds the hack sprinters in action, with the consistent Golden Chest at the head of the list. He should be well in the picture, and the pair likely to extend him may be Alunga and Reasonable. Nothing really stands out in the ten left to contest the Fitzherbert Handicap, which includes the Deficit Debham bracket. Impasto is a likely Auckland candidate who can carry weight, and after all 8.10 is not too much. Laughing Lass, now trained at Awapuni, is really in a class by herself. She should be the favourite.

Pakanui is a fit horse, and so is Debnam. Lady Ina’s consistent form suggests that she will be a fancied candidate, and Mala Hari, thougn meeting Lady Ina on even terms only, still has some excellent races to her credit. Of the trio lower down in lhe handicap perhaps Mittie may make most appeal. The favourites should be Laughing Lass, Mata Hari and Impasto. Ten are engaged in the Grandstand Handicap, run over nine furlongs, and here the form of Pukeko, Old Surrey and Slippery may bring them into favour. The following appear likely form horses to-day: — Maiden Race.—Haupongi, Aria, Mob Rule. Tokomaru Highweight. -• Hunting Queen. Beau Gallante, Red Sun. Tararua Hack Handicap. —Wananga (if present), Lustral, Charade. Manawatu ('up.—Master Brierly, The Bigol, Brazen King. Nursery Handicap. - - Rarotonga, Brazil. Dissipation. Gillies Hack Handicap. Alunga, Golden Chest, Reasonable. Fitzherbert Handicap. - - Laughing Lass. Mata Hari, Impasto. Grandstand Handicap.— Pukeko, Old Surrey. Slippery. Following is the list of acceptors:— 12.15 MAIDEN PLATE. ■Of £l2O ; six furlongs).

SOUTH ISLAND AT WINGATUI TO-DAY DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB SUMMER MEETING CARD The principal race meeting in the South Island to-day and to-morrow is the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Wingatui, where the win-and-place system will operate on the totalisator. As many of the horses will race at Invercargill, Wyndham, or Waikouaiti during the New Year campaign, the form at Wingatui will provide a good pointer. Only seven remain in the principal event, the Otago Handicap, one of the acceptors, Cottingham, having dropped out. It looks as if followers of form will favour Silver Streak, Davolo, Rebel Lad, or Queen Dorothy. The other events have filled well. The following may be well supported in their respective engagements:— Otokia Hurdles.—Last Link, The Surgeon. Trial Handicap.—Pink Del, Pretender, Adina. Dunedin . Handicap.—Ortyx, Pink Bond, On Call. Federal Handicap. —Janet Gaynor, Gold Boa, Invoice. Otago Handicap.—Silver Streak. Queen Dorothy, Rebel Lad. Milburn Handicap.—Lord Nuffield, Palmyra. High Glee. Burnside Handicap.—Valarth, Daring Deed, Petersham. Salisbury Handicap. Thermidor, Paladino. Norseman. Following is the acceptance list: — OTOKIA HURDLES (Of £150; It miles.)

Martara, who was sold to an Indian sportsman some time ago, won the Wellesley Plate at Colombo on December 4. Con Fuoco and Locknit were scratched from all their Taranaki engagements at 9.53 a.m. on Thursday.

ELLERSLIE_ RACES AUCKLAND CUP DAY BIG HOLIDAY CARNIVAL REVIEW OF PROSPECTS (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Dec. 25. Taking the Te Awamutu meeting as a guide, with a turnover nearly £7OOO better than ever before on that course, there should be a huge sum invested at Ellerslie on Monday next, Boxing Day, on the occasion of the opening of the Auckland R.C. summer fixture, which extends over four days. On Monday the Cup, Railway Handicap and Foal Stakes will be run, on Wednesday there is the Summer Cup and King’s Plate, on the third day, January 1, there are the Derby and A.R.C. Handicap, and on January 3 the fixture concludes with the Grandstand Handicap, Royal Stakes and Clifford Plate as the outstanding attractions. Sportsmen* from all over the Dominion will be present. The going promises to be fast indeed unless heavy rain falls over the weekend. Betting will be under the usual 75—25 per cent. Ellerslie system. Nothing particularly enlightening has happened during the week in connection with the Auckland Cup and there will be about 13 or 14 runners, quite a big enough field on this track. Cerne Abbas is entitled to hold her place as favourite and as she has proved herself a genuine stayer the others have to demonstrate their superiority in this direction before she will go down to defeat. She is the pick of the handicap and with a good passage she should follow in the footsteps of other good marcs in Fast Passage and Cuddle who captured the New Zealand and Auckland Cups in the one season.

Wild Chase and Argentic will carry a lot of support, so that Riccarton threatens to be right in the limelight. Wotan has been given a rather light preparation, although he was very fit when he left Melbourne and as a welltreated stayer he will have to be respected. Friesland is a doubtful quantity, and the lesser lights are Jonathan, Knight of Australia, Kelly, Fersen, Padishah. Shy and The Buzzer. Faith is still pinned to Cerne Abbas.

Stretto has advanced strongly into favour for the Railway Handicap and if she meets with no interference to her preparation she will go out favourite on Monday. Her Te Awamutu success was registered with a minimum of effort; indeed, it was one of lhe most convincing sprint performances of lhe year. Royal Bachelor, too, may be a thorn in the side of the majority of candidates, while early speed to take them out. of trouble from barrier-rise is possessed by Palustre and Orate. Solid type sprinters are Paper Slipper, Golden Sheila, Ben Braggie, Oratory, Peter Beckford, Trilliarch, Black Thread, Joviality. Bachelor King, Anion and Farland will tend to make it very interesting for the first-mentioned pair. It is not often that speculators who go in early have had such a direct form pointer as Stretto extended to them last Sat urday.

The Great Northern Foal Stakes promises to be a wonderfully good race, for it will provide lhe greatest clash of the season’s juveniles, not

even excepting the Wellesley Stakes, which Gay Son won. The Ellerslie event, may be such another as that of 1919. when Humbug, carrying £5200, defeated Right and Left and the favourite, Mermin, on whom £5BOO was invested. Up to the eleventh hour it appeared as if at least six of those engaged for Boxing Day would have to be considered, but Homily is reported to be suffering from a cold, and Gay Son is also under a cloud, though he galloped a smart half-mile yesterday morning. Gay Son won the Wellesley Stakes in fine style, and Homily was too smart for the best Australian juveniles in the spring. Amigo might have been unlucky in the Wellesley Stakes, if his two wins on later days at Trentham can be accepted at face value. This Beau Pere gelding, however, has been affected by a cold, though he galloped well prior to leaving for Ellerslie. Taurangi won impressively at Trentham and Riccarton, and she might have beaten Peerless in lhe Welcome Stakes but for being short of a gallop. She has done well since. Peerless, according to Trentham reports, has improved wonderfully following her Riccarton successes. Te Hero, the halfbrother to Gallio, impresses as one likely 1o reach the highest class and is a potential stayer. Aucklanders will not have him beaten, and it would not be surprising if he is nearly favourite on the day.

Another interesting item on Monday is the Christmas Handicap, for this is for the horses that are not in the Cup class or whose stamina is open to suspicion, but many of these will be found playing a prominent part in the shorter handicaps on the three later days. One notable galloper engaged is Royal Appellant, and he may pay to follow next week. Others in minor races that should show up are The Crooner (Queen’s Plate), Florence Mills (Robinson Handicap), Royal Mimic (Hurdles)- and Calorie (Nursery Handicap). The only horses coupled on the totalisator will be those in the Robinson Handicap, for which there is no room on the machine. These brackets are: Diacquedoon and Quilp, Joke Dance and Rajanya, Sly Fox and Si her Glow, and Romani and Trevace.

Horses likely to show up in their, engagements are lhe following:— 11.49: Queen’s Plate- The Crooner. Nightdress, Wagner. 12.34: G.N. Foal Stakes.--Taurangi, Amigo, Te Hero. 1.24: Robinson Handicap.—Florence Mills, Bronzette, Te Monowai. 2.14: Auckland Cup.—Cerne Abbas, Wild Chase, The Buzzer. 2.59: Grafton Hurdles. Royal Mimic, L’Allegro, Modern Maid. 3.49: Railway Handicap.—Stretto, Royal Bachelor, Oratory. 4.34: Nursery Handicap.—Calorie, Bright Wings, Sir Robin. 5.24: Christmas Handicap.—Royal Appellant, Kiltowyn, Valamito. Following is the list of acceptors:— QUEEN’S PLATE. (Of £5OO ; three-year-olds, 8.0; four-year-olds and upwhrds, 8.9 ; mares allowed 51b. ; 1 mile.)

WAIPUKURAU CLUE HOLIDAY MEETING BRIEF REVIEW OF CARD. Fields for the Waipukurau Racing Club’s Boxing Day meeting are not very large, as might be expected with the more important Manawatu meeting in such close proximity. Still, the fixture will attract a good deal of local patronage. The betting will be on the single-pool system. The only open race is the Open Flying, in which Mata Hari and Slippery claim engagements that clash with Awapuni, but if on hand they will be preferred. Wananga, engaged in the Amalgamation Cup Handicap, is also in the Tararua Hack Handicap at Awapuni to-day, as also is Lady Wessex.

The following may be in request in their engagements:— Maiden Race.—Flame Queen, Hunting Mint. Juvenile Handicap. Rakahanga, Cherry Plum. Amalgamation Hack Handicap.— Gran vale, Wananga, Umpire. Braeburn Hack.—Taro, Marsyas, bindrum. Hunter Handicap. Tres Sec, Umpire. Novice Race.—Thala, Tommy Atkins, Ohu. Open Flying.—Mata Hari (if present), Hatuma, Gasman. Porangahau Hack.—Fossicker, Felicitation. Following is the list of acceptors:— 12.0

SUCCESSFUL JOCKEY WINS FIVE RACES. HUNTSMAN ANNEXES DOUBLE. SYDNEY, Dee. 24. The three-year-old colt Huntsman, by Hunting sshg, won the Maiden Hadicap and the third division of the Novice Handicap, at Newcastle yesterday. His rider. F. Shean, had five mounts and rode five winners.

TARANAKI MEETING NEW PLYMOUTH RACES SOME LIKELY PROSPECTS Catering for racing enthusiasts throughout the Taranaki province as far south as, and including, Wanganui, the midsummer meeting nf the Taranaki Jockey Club at New Plymouth to-day and to-morrow will be patronised by an even larger crowd of holidaymakers than usual. A larger contingent of horses from the Auckland province than ever before has had the result of swelling the fields to generous proportions, and the racing should be interesting. Betting at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meetings is on the win-and-p.'ace system, with complete arrangements for the smooth handling of investors’ requirements. The -irst race, the Rahotu Hurdles, is to start at 11.45 a.m. The majority of the nine likely contestants are trained in the Taranaki province, and the form is fairly well revealed. Three Auckland horses in Boughal, Celtic Lad, and Belbroney are engaged, and the best of these is Boughal, who may lead Sporting Song and Book Law a merry dance. 'l he Huatoki Plate field is a large one, and among the possibles are Cold Glare, Asset, Trilit ho. Narrator, Golden Orchid, Hunting Blood, Flashing Spear, Script, Sam’s Choice and Pekoe. However, Hunting Blood is one that, stands out, with Sam’s Choice and Pekoe dangerous. Five furlongs is the distance they

will be required to scamper over in the Borough Juvenile, and at th.it Rat cline, Namara and Dralhula maybe preferred. The field of nine for the Flying Handicap includes two, Taitoru and Lady Kyra, who are also engaged in the Christmas Handicap. Tosh appears to have the best chance, with Airing and Clessamor best of the others.

Middle’s performances point decidedly to the Centrepiece gelding as one of lhe best of the Uruti Hack Handicap field. He may meet with stoutest opposition from Winsome Lu and Gay Sister. The defection of Con Fuoco and the likely absence of Reipar will rob the Christmas Handicap of a good deal of interest, but Taitoru must have a good chance, even weighted with 9.5. One Whetu and Mungatoon appear to be next best. Race Call is the outstanding contestant cf the set weights event, th? Tikorangi Stakes. Several of the remainder can muster up a lot of pace, and Miss Te Koura and Hunting Blood (if started) will probably be next best.

The hack sprint, the Stewards' Hack Handicap, has another field of nine, lhe fifth such field of the day. Philemup is the likely favourite, especially in view of the fact that he is fancied for the Atiawa Hack Cup to-morrow, and he is preferred to Cute Melody and Student Prince. The following may make most appeal in lheir respective engagements: Rahotu Hurdles.—Sporting Blood, Boughal, Book Law. Huatoki Plate. Hunting Blood. Sam’s Choice, Pekoe. Borough Juvenile.—Raceline, Namara, Dralhula. Flying Handicap.—Tosh, Airing, Clessamor. Uruti Hack Handicap. - - Middle, Gay Sister, Winsome Lu. Christmas Handicap.—Taitoru, One Whetu, Mungatoon. Tikorangi Stakes. —Race Call, Hunting Blood (if reserved), Miss Te Koura. Stewards’ Hack.—Philemup, Cute Melody, Student Prince. Following is the list of acceptors:— 11.45 - RAHOTU HURDLES HANDICAP (Of £150; 11 miles and 100yds.)

An Auckland report states that Homily was absent from the track on Friday morning owing to contracting a cold, and unless she improves she will be missing from the Great Northern Foal Stakes field. Pursuit has been scratched for the Maiden Race at lhe Manawatu races, slated a Press Association message last night from Palmerston North.

WITH THE JOCKEYS RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Jockeys’ engagements throughout the holiday race meeting will prove of interest to stay-at-home investors. Here are some of those already announced:— At Ellerslie. Winsome Lu, Race Cal', Dancing Lady. STRATFORD RACES PROGRAMME FOR NEW YEAR There are splendid fields for the Stratford Racing Club's popular sum- 1 mer meeting at Te Kapua Park, Strat- i ford, on January 1 and 3, and as the! stakes have been substantially increased the fields should be strong not | only in numbers but in quality. I On the first day, lhe slake for the Stratford Gold Cup has been increas-1 ed £5OO, including a £5O gold cup, and | in addition the winning trainer and jockey are to receive a chronometer and a gold-mounted riding whip respectively. Friesland and Taitoru, with 9.2, are! the top weights in the handicap.;, but there is plenty of material lower down in the list to make for a sterling contest if the scratching pen is used lightly. An interesting runner would be Grateful, surprise winner of the Te Awamutu Cup, and Linguist, a southerner, who was a quiet tip for the last New Zealand Cup, and who ran a surprisingly good race to finish close to the placed horses. The principal race on the second day, the Malone Memorial Handicap, has a slake of £3OO, and the Stratford Hack Cup is worth £225, including a £25 trophy. The course is expected to be in tip-top order. There is ample room for the largest field, [ and its long straight, of more than! two furlongs makes the track one ofj the hest in the Dominion. Improvements for the comfort and convenL j once of patrons include a new totalisa-1 tor with the latest indicator. Acceptances for the first day’s i events close to-morrow (Tuesday). | December 28, at 9 p.m., with lhe secro-1 tary, Mr. C. R. F. Tilley. P.O. Box 65, | Stratford (telephone 345). Captain Furst, who was owned by Mr H. Neagle, of Taradalc, broke a leg on Thursday and had to be dedestroyed. By Arausio from the King Mark mare Huiaru, Captain Furst won two races last season.

Gay Son ran four furlongs al Ellerslie on Friday morning, covering the half-mile in 49 3-ssec.. though it was stated he is still suffering from a cold.
