TRAGIC DEATH
SERGEANT AS SANTA CLAUS ' PARACHUTE SWEPT TO SEA j ARMY POST CHILDREN’S PARTY. ! (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright; Received Dec. 23, 9.30 p.m. BOSTON, Dec. 22. An Air Corps sergeant, dressed as Santa Claus, parachuting to the scene of a children’s Christmas party at an army post, was swept out to sea, and, after a frantic three-hour search by aeroplanes, his body was found on a nearby beach. He had divested him* self of the parachute, but the weight of the Kriss Kringle equipment apparently resulted in his drowning.
His wife and child witnessed the accident, which brought in its train two other accidents, one resulting in severe injury to another officer, when, in the tumult of organising a rescue, he was cut by a propeller of a bombing ’plane. The other accident involved the rescue of two men from drowning when a dinghy capsized as they were attempting to row to the aid of the sergeant who was swept out to sea.
