GATE-MONEY DISPUTE

FINDING FOR BOXER SYDNEY, Oct. 26. In the Equity Court to-day Mr Justice Maughan found in favour of the boxer Al Romero in the dispute about gate money between Romero and his Los Angeles manager, Albert Donaldson. The Court found that the Sydney solicitor had no authority from Donaldson to enter into an oral agreement with Romero. As a sequel to the light on August 17 between Romero and Henneberry, an application was made in the Equity Court the following day for a temporary injunction to restrain the National Boxing Club from paying to Romero one-third of his share of the gate money. The application was made by Mr J. G. Riddle, as attorney for Albert Donaldson, of Los Angeles, who claimed to be Romero’s manager, and who alleged that Romero had . contracted in 1934 to pay one-third of his earnings in all contests arranged for him to Donaldson. Romero, according to Donaldson, left America without the latter’s consent, and entered into a contract with the National Boxing Club without making provision for Donaldson as he was bound to do. The Court granted the application. Henneberry was given a decision against Romero on a foul. It was reported later that the directors of the National Boxing Club had declared the fight a "no-decision” one because of the stadium rule that no contest shall end on a foul. A Sydney message on August 23 stated that the National Boxing Club, at a board meeting, decided to pay Romero his share of the purse for his contest against Henneberry. One-third of Romero’s money had been deducted pending the Court’s decision on tne dispute as to his alleged managership. The board also vetoed the announcement that the referee's verdict had been converted into "no decision,” and Henneberry was declared the winner.
