REGENT THEATRE

“ROSE OF THE RANCHO.’• The story of “Pose of the Rancho" —the beautiful, 1 jh-spirited Spanish girl who led her people against the rapacious American land-grabbers in the lirst years of California’s statehood—has thrilled motion picture and stage audiences alike for more than 20 years. Now for the first time this dashing romance of old Monterey comes to the screen with a musical score, the lirst original operetta-type score ever written for motion pictures, with Gladys Swarthout, brilliant star of the Metropolitan Opera, and John Boles, handsome dramatic singer, in the leading roles. “Rose of the Rancho’’ is screening finally to-night at the Recent Theatre. The associate programme includes another of the sensational “March of Time" series, giving a new angle on the situation between Japan and China in Manchuria, a 200 ft. colour classic entitled “Morocco Nights" and another enjoyable “Popeye the Sailor Mau" cartoon. “Love at Second Sight." Commencing to-morrow for a season i of two days, “Love at Second Sight" I features Claude Hulbert aud Marian I March, “Queen of Hearts." The newest Grade Fields picture, “Queen of Hearts," is coming on Friday to the Regent Theatre. The famous star is revealed in a new light, and her performance is easily her best to date. The show is rich in humour and melody, and there are some spectacular scenes to captivate the eye, and some excellent dancing—especially a burlesque apache dance, in which Miss Fields has the audience in shrieks of laughter when she is tossed hither aud thither by a dancer who mistakes her for a professional, whereas she has I never danced previously. That scene is I the funniest in a show that is entertaining from beginning to end.
