WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT PATEA. Mrs. A. Carey presided over a large attendance of members of the I’atea Women’s Institute at the monthly meeting on Friday. Mrs. Carey welcomed new members and visitors, and then read the motto “We can only be valued, as we make ourselves valued.” New members were Mesdames Patchett, -C. Larcombe, Boswell, L. Ellis, Davidson, C. Hill, T. A. Crawford, J. W. Williams, Fugle, and Misses Bromiley and J. Spurdie. Apologies were received from Mesdames Walton, R. E. Moore, Power, Roots, Lester, L. T. Adams. .Mrs. Carey described the W. 1. badge for the benefit of new members. An invitation was received from the Kakaramea Women’s Institute to their third birthday on Wednesday, May 27, and one to the Patea Blanket Society’s annual meeting on May 18. The N.Z. Institute for the Blind wrote asking the institute to co-operate with other local bodies in organising and arranging for a visit from the Blind Institute. Mrs. Carey said it would be about October when the visitors would be in Patea, and she asked for offers to billet them. It was left to Mrs. Carey to make arrangements with other bodies to form a committee. Miss Stops wrote expressing her delight at the. planting of the tree to commemorate her visit and advised that she could not personally answer cacn letter received, but would be saying goodbye from J YA on May 22. Mrs. Carey reported that as there was no time to notify anyone of the invitations to the Whenuakura W.p.F.U. birthday, an advertisement had been put in the paper. Airs. J. A. Wither apologised for the short notice given to the birthday, stating that as she was going away members thought they would like to have the birthday before she left, and this had left very little time. The president reported that, the Arts and Crafts Circle meeting had not been well attended. It was decided to hold the, meeting on the third Tuesday in the month in the borough council chambers. No enthusiasm was shown at a suggestion that the Drama Circle should be reformed. It was reported that a School for Drama was to be held at Wanganui from June 22, to 23. Decided to send Mrs. A. Carey as delegate to the Dominion Conference at IDunedin. Mrs. Carey returned thanks fc-r honouring her by the appointment for the fourth time,' and would endeavour to bring back a comprehensive report. Decided to add to Waihi’s remit “That the Government be urged to recind resolution of dental clinics pay-

ing a levy to the Health Department., the, following “That the. treatment be given to children 1 rom 2 years to 12. Mrs. W. Taylor, Alton, gave an ex cellent demonstration on reed loom basketry, and kindly donated the basket demonstrated fur competition. Airs. Carey gave a comprehensive report on the council meeting held at Stratoford. Next month is to be bc-ok month, members bringing any books finished with, for the hospital, and a talk will be given by Air. J. Houston, Hawera, on Maori lore, and members are invited to bring any Mac-ri curios they possess.
