Barton, in accepting the position as conductor for the time being, said that the Alarton band should try to place themselves on the map, and to do this they should endeavour to go contesting. The Marton band had done it before and there was no reason why they shoifld not do so again. How-' ever, the evenings spent with the bandsmen had been pleasant ones and I he would like to congratulate Air.. Thorby and Air. C. Anderson for their | attendance record. They had to come long distances to attend practices and this should be an example to others. Air. T. Barton stated that the band should try and provide a paid conductor who would undoubtedly give more time to the work than he himself. He was sorry that time did not permit him to do more, but he would continue with his duties until such time as a paid conductor was available. (Applause). , Air. J. D. Gorrie, on behalf of the public and Borough Council, said that

they were indebted to Air. Barton for ; accepting the position of bandmaster. ; Jt was decided to have a band photo J taken and Air. F. Thorby offered to ! frame it. j The secretary (Mr. R. D. Ormond; 1 was granted an honorarium. i A motion to advertise for junior ; players to be taught band music, each boy to bo charged 2s per week, was carried unanimously. In seconding the ' motion, Air. Kitehing said t’ at to-day J there wsre r.o junior members who I could come up into the senior ranks. Some two years ago Air. C. Anderson j did not know a note of band music, ' but to-day, through constant practice, I he was one of the best and in time to come he would outshine some of the present members. Jt was practice that makes perfect, he concluded. A vote of thanks to the i’ress was expressed by Air. T. Barton, who said that it had been a number of years since a representative of the Press had I been present. By means of the Press the public were able to get an insight into the progress and activities of the band.
