ON TARANAKI TRACKS

HUNT CLUBS’ MEETING. SATV RDAY ’S GALLOPS. (Special to ‘‘Chronicle.’’) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 10. The New Plymouth tracks this morn ing were again on the heavy side for gallojung, though the going on the outside of the. course proper was really good lor this lime of the year. The Hags wore well out, and so no very fast times were recorded, though the work was full of interest and the efforts of the local candidates showed that they were well forward jn \iew ot their coming engagements at the combined hunts meeting. Dulicu’s team worked shortly after daybreak, when the conditions were

slightly better than for the later arrivals, who worked in misty rain. Chief Marionette, who shows ni signs of soreness, was trotted around the course proper. After her spell this mare is naturally carrying a lot of condition, but. it is pleasing to see her apparently sound again.

The British Empire—Archquil gelding did steady pace work on the inner grass with Lord Aintree. The novice is growing all the time and, while not being a handsome juvenile, looks as if he will be solid. Lord Aintree. was heavily bandaged, but pulled up quite well. Sporting Song had no difficulty in holding Red Sand (Savage) over half a mile in 56 4-5, the first two furlongs in 28 2-5. Sporting Song is very well just, now, but Red Sand has improved a lot since last season and should be a spring prospect. 11 inkey Pinkey (Savage) just shaded Mustang (Williams) in a sprint over two furlongs down the back in a trifle better time than 13sec. to the furlong. As this was the first serious gallop Hinkey Pinkey has been given her display was extremely satisfactory. She is a much improved filly. Mustang also looks well, and has undoubtedly brightened up since coming lo New Plymouth. Gold Mission (Savage) was always going well within herself in her halfmile effort in 56 3-5, the first two furlongs in 28. She rose to open company last season and she looks likely to go still further in the new term. Silk Sox Impresses. After breakfast Silk Sox (George) rar. an easy half mile alone in 56 15, maintaining an even gait throughout. The big Royal Divorce gelding, who was brought in by float for the gallop, looks particularly well and seems brighter since his race at the point-to-point last Saturday. Ngaterahiri (Pell) and Whoa Johnny (Robertson) were associated over three furlongs, which occupied 42 1-5. Whoa Johnny had to be kept up to his task, whereas Ngaterahiri was travelling smoothly thiought. He is a ready-made galloper. The Mint Leaf—Screed gelding exercised on the inner grass. Golden Rill (Eley) showed up to better advantage than Tahurangi (Davoren) over five furlongs, run in 1.9 4-5, the last half-mile in 55 4-5. Golden Rill has improved out of all knowledge in the past few weeks ami does her mentor credit.

Orapai (11. Dulieu) worked steadily oxer a couple of rounds on the inner grass and carefully jumped the second hurdle in the straight each time. Yesterday morning the Thespian gelding, ridden by Dulieu, schooled over eight hurdles. The first, five he negotiated carefully, but, gaining confidence, he took the last three obstacles brilliantly. There is no doubt he will make good as a jumper for the ability is born in him.

Aussie Ra (Robertson) was going very comfortably alongside Davistock (Pell) over three furlongs in 42sec. Aussie Ra has wintered particularly and has developed into an outstanding four-year-old. It will be a great surprise if he fails to make a high-class stayer, for most Australian Sun horses improve in stamina with age. Best of the Morning. By far the best gullop of the morning was that between Refresher (Davoren) and Chikara (Savage). The j>air jumped away smartly from the five furlongs peg to cut out the first two furlongs in 24lsec. and they came home well together to run the full distance in 1.7. Chikara’s effort for a horse that has done very little racing was most pieusing. He is far more solid than |ie was last season, and looks as if lie will do Mr. A. Yarndley good service this term. Like his dam, Pouina, he is not big, but he is nuggety and appears to possess her gameness. Refresher is one of the overgreens. He retains his brilliance as of yore and is one of the most solid horses on the tracks. He could have improved on his time this morn ing, for he was going very comfortably alongside Chikara in the last furlong. The big Lord Warden —Bright Glow filly, Bonny Glow (Pell)), again gave evidence of the vast, improvement she has made since last season by finishing on terms with Lady Kyra (Lorigan) over half a milet in 54 2-ssec. Bonny Glow is beginning to shape up well and, though her galloping action is still a trifle extravagant on the hinds, she looks likely to win a high place among the three-year-old fillies ihis sea

son. She is engaged in the Wanganui Guineas and both Derbies, as well as the Oaks and St. Legers. Lady Kyra was not hustled and looks in better nick to begin her spring racing than she did last year. Glenvano (Davoren) bowled along well over five furlongs in 1.8 25, 1 lit 1 last, three in 43sec. He had gone on the right way since winning at Awapuni last month, and should be heard of again at an early date. Joy Box (George) ran her half-mile in 56 1 ssec. She ran the first two furlongs in 27 l-ssee. and was then picked up by 1 Welcome Lu (Savage), who just headed her home. Joy Box has thickened out since last season, but. Welcome Lu’s effort was particularly pleasing. This well-bred two. year-old looks a likely sort. Red Fox (Lorigan), after taking 28 sec. for the, first two, v an his four furlongs in 57see. He looks more solid than last season, but whether he has improved or not in galloping ability remains to be seen, lie looks more of the jumping type. High Test ami the Cleasanta gelding
