The Daily Mail’s Nice correspondent says that .Mr. J. M. Gerard, United States Ambassador at Berlin during the Great War, who was spending a holiday at Cap d’Antibes, was urgently summoned by the United States Government to proceed to Rome. He left immediately for a meeting with Signor Mussolini specially arranged for 4 p.m. to-day. It is believed he will be asked to act as mediator in the Italo-Abyssuiian dispute. The largest military manoeuvres ever held in Europe will commence at the Brenner Pass in the latter half of August. half a million Italians participating. The Brenner Pass, in the Alps, is the great gate of Italy and by it most of the Teutonic invaders reached Italian, soil. Many side passes join the great thoroughfare, and it has possessed a carriage road since 1772 and a railway since 1867. From Innsbruck to the summit of the pass, by rail through Austrian territory, the distance is 25 miles. The pass, which is 4495 feet high, is the lowest and one of the most frequented passes through the Al]ss in all ages. It connects Innsbruck (Austria) and Verona (Italy).
