THE CITY COUNCIL

VARIOUS WORKS INSPECTED j TRIP ROUND THE CITY j Members uf the City Council and i three officers made an inspection of i various city works yesterday. The trip, which was comprehensive, was arranged, primarily, to give new members of the council first hand knowledge of what is in hand and also with the idea of showing the council, as a whole, sites whereon work must be put in hand in the future or whereon ratepayers have requested that work be commenced. Thu party headed by the chairman of the Works Committee (Cr. J. D. Crowley), and accompanying him were Crs. 1\ C. Atkinson, J. Siduells, A. JL Halligan, T. L. fSpcrring, G. Bennett, and O. Hales, the town clerk (Air. George Murch), the city engineer (Air. L. E. Row) and the assistant engineer (Mr. V. C. Rapson). The journey was via Heads Road to Castlecliff. En route the party inspected a house which, suffers from sewerage overflow during heavy rain. To overcome the difficulty would necessitate a fairly costly job, involving increasing the

sewer outfall to the river. This would require something like £7UOO to be expended. An inspection was made of the Castlecliff metal pit, from where most of the metal for Gonville and Castlecliff has been quarried. Relief labour has started recently to strip the sand back and fill in the old pit. The party was impressed with the work in hand on the beach front. A great deal more levelling has been done and planted by relief labour. The sand hill at the bath house is to be used as a complete filling at the camp site and children’s playground. The camp has been fitted up with conveniences, showers and kitchen, and the tennis courts adjoining are very convenient. I‘uriri Street, of dusty fame, was inspected, but the day was such that the dust was well laid. The tram track in the process of regrading was inspected. It is intended to re-metal the straight in readiness for tar-sealing next season. The party moved into Totara Btreet to make itself conversant with the locality on which the headmaster of the Tawhera School has asked for a footpath—from the school to Copley’s store. Formation and metalling will be required in this area. Via I’uriri Street the members catered tbc municipal golf Jinks and spent a considerable time inspecting them. The whole area was covered and improvements pointed out. ft is proposed to level Lorensdale I’ark iu the central portion by the utilisation of relief labour. The scheme was thoroughly outlined to the visiting party. Koroniiko Road was inspected where levelling work, has been completed and metalling is now in progress. By lowering the grade some six to eight feet the council has improved several hitherto waste sections. Cambridge Terrace has uow been formed through tu Koroniiko Road. A short inspection was made of the levelled children’s playground in Carlton Avenue and the party moved on to the shelter of “Bookies’ Hill.’’ The members studied the levelling work now in progress which is destined to force certain eyes to seek other vantage points from which to view, with tranquil or turbulent mind, the glorious sport of kings. All the footpath material for Wanganui city is made at the hot-mix plant, and the party made a close inspection of this important unit of activity. Carlton Avenue Extension, which is being furmed by relief labour, was inspected; also the temporary rubbish dump now in use and which will be completely covered by the new formation. The trip continued back, towards the centre of the city via Bclwyn and Grey Streets, from which locality a petition tu seal footpaths has been forwarded. The party arrived at the yard at 11.40 a.m. and made a complete inspection

of all there was to be seen in the way of plant and tools, office and stores. Crossing over to St. George’s Gate the damaged sewer outfall was looked at and portions of the Bell Street footpath which had been made the subject of complaint from a ratepayer. After lunch an inspection of the Airport was made. Levelling work is proceeding, turf being lifted and re-laid to grade. The party was impressed with the improvements carried out to date and gained first hand knowledge of how useful relief labour has been in creating a national asset. Travelling towards Wanganui East, via Anzac Parade, the members inspected a small bridge which is to be replaced by a wider structure. A close inspection was made of Williams Park, Wanganui East, another of the city’s reserves which has received prominence at the council table of late. The journey back Io the city was made via t’ . Dublin Btreet Bridge, where the painting and recent repair work was inspected. Chipping and painting below deck is now in progress. The party examined the footwalk with a view to better studying the proposal that guard rails be (‘reeled to prevent children from suddenly dashing out on to the vehicular portion to tbe monace uf their own limbs and lives. It is estimated lhat such work would cost £llO A trip was made then to the Westmere Reservoir, via Halswell Street. Flic new pipe line was inspected en route. The valves and meter house were closely studied, together with the work in progress of tupping the new 16-inch main into the reservoir.
