AMATEURS AT WESTPORT MAHER CUP COMPETITION. MARLBOROUGH BEATS BULLER. [ Per Press Association J WESTPORT, March 16. The Maher Cup athletic competitions were held in Victoria Square this afternoon in the presence of a fairly large gathering of spectators. The weather was fine but windy. Although Greymouth made last-minute entries the competition was confined to Marlborough (holders) and Buller, the former winning by 81 points to (ii. For a time there was a ncck-and-neck race for points, .but over the final stages the Marlborough competitors asserted their superiority. An outstanding performer was the All Black, E. Holder (Buller) who won the 100yds. (JO 1-5), 220yds’ (22 4-5), hop, step and jump (43ft. 2in.), and as last man with leeway to make up made a brilliant sustained run to win barely the men’s relay race for Buller. H. j. Eaton (Marlborough) brilliantly won the 880yds., mile flat and ran second to D. Hardie (Buller) in the 440yds. in a thrilling finish. Miss June Riley (Buller) won the women’s 75yds. from Miss Wareham (Marlborough), the latter winning the 100 yd?., with Miss Deilby (Marlborough) second and Miss Riley third. Honours in the cycling were shared by McMahon (Marlborough), who won the half-mile and three mile, and G. Robinson (Marlborough), who won the three miles, with Marlborough filling second and third places also. Kevall (Greymouth) was first home in the junior 100yds., but was beaten by Evans (Marlborough) ip the 200yds. R. Keats and J. Broadmore, both of Marlborough, tied in the high jump, sft. Sin.
