THE TURF

N.Z. DERBY SPORTING BLOOD’S WIN VINTAGE AND CRANFORD C.J.C. MEETING CONTINUES. (Special to “Chronicle.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5. The Canterbury Jackcy Club’s spring racing carnival was continued to-day. when Sporting Blood won the New Zealand Derby and Vintage and Cranford th© principal handicap events. Semper Paratus Surprises. Semper Paratus brought off a surprise in the Highweight comparable in dividend to that of Steeton in the Cup. He was always in front and won well from Honest Maid, whose improvement was anticipated. Earthquake was at double figures for third. The favourites were well beaten but Cottingham lost ground at the start, while Palatinate was fifty yards last early and he finished well. The good thing in Symcony was decisively beaten in the Juvenile event but she was not disgraced. Silver Sail was always doing it better, and although Symcony had charge up the straight Silver Sail worried her out of it. They had run themselves out at the end, enabling Round Up to flash up for a close third. The others were com pletely outpaced. Cranford’s Sprint. Cranford, who seems partial to the Riccarton seven furlongs, set such a fast pace in the Criterion Handicap that he had all his opponents bar Mobile cracked up at the finish. Mobile dropped back to the rear on the turn but this enabled him to put in a solid finishing run. Gaysome lost ground early and may have been asked to go up too soon. She ran a good race. The others were all well beaten, though Copyist got a poor early passage and was right in front at six furlongs when he stopped. Sporting Blood Superior. Sporting Blood duly won the Derby, for which he was betted on as a certainty, but Synagogue pushed him all the way home. Sporting Blood settled down in fifth place while Synagogue tailed the field but both were well within reach of the leaders, Synagogue plainly waiting for Sporting Blood’s forward move. It came entering the straight, Synagogue following through. The latter drew level at the false rail but Sporting Blood took up the challength, a flat-out finish seeing the favourite just a few pounds superior. The others were outclassed. The Dunedin Guineas winner, Taurmai, was a poor third, proving that the Northern three-year-old form is definitely superior. The feature of the Fendalton Handicap was the way Vintage won at the finish, in very fast lime. He proved decisively superior, taking charge inside the last furlong and winning easing up. Silver Sight’s second was a surprise. Polydora improved on her Cup running. She finished well. Davolo looked likely at a mile but did not run on, while Might was plainly feeling the effects of the Cup race.* Passion Fruit put up a good fourth after being prominent throughout and might improve. Southdown was always well back and the Cup winner, Steeton, after running to the front early, finished last. Vintage will be hard to heat again next time up on to-day’s form. Extra Smart Hack. Rebel Chief again showed his opponents a clean pair of heels in the Randolph Handicap. In front all the way he won unchallenged, being an extra smart hack. Top Rank just beat a fresh horse in Colossian for second and the rest were well beaten, though Orris again finished on from the rear. Rebel Star endeavoured to emulate Rebel Chief and win a double in the same way. He was in front till the last half-furlong when Red Boa, who had been behind him in the running, wore him down and paid double figures. Kemal Pasha, always prominent, was a good third and Quietly a moderate fourth. Rebel Star hung" on well and was not disgraced as the winner has good form. MELBOURNE CUP DAY CENTENARY TROPHY RACE BIG FIELD FOR TO-DA Y>B RACE (By ‘ ‘ Kestrel’ ’) With a stake of £lO,OOO aud a trophy valued at £2OO, the Melbourne Uup, to be run at Flemington to-day, is the richest race in tile Southern Hemisphere and can be ranked among the greatest races in the turf calendar. Added interest in this great race will .be provided by. the presence at the \ .R.C. meeting to-day of the King’s son, the Duke of Gloucester, who wiil present Hie Cup trophy io the winning owner after the race, it may- be- taken for. granted that one of the greatest crowds ever seen al Flemington will be registered to-day, and the prospects are that there will be well oyer 100,000 people present when the Uup race is being run. New Zea land will listen in to the broadcast. When tho final acceptances were taken for the Melbourne Cup last week 25 of the original 365 nominated remained m, and perhaps a couple of these may drop out as a result of their displays last .'Satinday, when the meeting opened. Peter Pau, Panto and Theo, all winners on the opening day, remain in, while several others with good form are engaged. The Caulfield Cup winner, Journal is to attempt the task of completing the two Cups double, the only other horse in the history of the two races to be successful in this direction being Poseidon, who won the. Caulfield Cup and Melbourne •Cup in 1906. In to-day’s field there is last year’s winner, Hall Mark, and the winner a year earlier Peter Pan, and these two will be essaying a task which was only successfully achieved by Archer, the first winner of the Uup well over half a century ago. Twelve months ago there were eighteen contestants, while the number of starters in 1932 was 27. The record field was that in which Carbine was successful in 1890, when the number of star ers was 39- Phar Lap so dominated the issue in three successive years that tlrere were small fields in 1929 (fourteen), 1930 (fifteen) and 1931 (fourteen), that racing freak being beaten by Nightmarch and PaquH.o in 1929 and winning in 1930. New Zealand horses have played no small part in the Melbourne Cup, Sasanof and Nightmarch being two of the best who were owned here, while Carbine, Apologue and Phar Lap were bred on this side of the Tasman. In to-day’s race there are three direct New Zealand representatives, Nightly, Sir Simper and Limbohm, in addition to three other horses, Miramond, Theo and Gladswood, who were bred in the Dominion and are now owned in Australia. Final acceptances for the Cantala Stakes, to be run next Saturday, also closed to-day. They include the New Zealanders. Silver Ring and Epigram. At this distance it would appear presumptuous to attempt to forecast the result, but if performances count for anything Sir Simper, who saw the light of day at the Westmere Stud, should be in the firing-line at the finish. Details are:— MELBOURNE CUP. (Of £lO,OOO anl trophy valued at £2OO ; two miles).
