MAJESTIC THEATRE

“BIPTIDE” SHOWING. Norma- Shearer offers another of her I magnetic and fascinating performances I as a modern woman with ultra-modern ideals in “Riptide,” which shows finally at the Majestic Theatre to-day. Lavishly produced and brilliantly enacted by its star and an impressive supporting cast, this new Shearer feature stands out as one of the finest productions from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios and provides an entertainment of distinction in every phase of motion picture artistry. It is said that as Lady Rexford, in this daringly triangular Continental romance, Miss Shearer is regally superb and that never before has she appeared so beautifully photograped or handsomely costumed. Robert Montgomery and Herbert Marshall are in support. The plot of “Riptide” reveals Miss Shearer as a very modern young woman who is unafraid of life, entrusting her emotions to an honesty of expression, regardless of consequences. Married to a matter-of-fact English lord, she becomes stifled in an atmosphere of smug oppression. From this sheltered life she finds exhilaration in the mad pursuit of a former sweetheart who willingly renews the chase of earlier days. Ensuing situations bring about a marital deadlock which, through unique treatment of story, culminates happily. Mrs. Patrick Campbell, the noted British actress, heads the impressive supporting cast. Graphic scenes of the tragic Morro Oastle fire, filmed in comprehensive and thrilling detail by cameramen who braved hazards to obtain them, will be included in an exclusive special Metrotone News attached to the “Riptide” programme. “Crime on the Hill.” “Crime on the Hill,” the 8.1. P. film which will be shown to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre, is an adaptation of the famous stage mystery thriller by Jack De Leon and Jack Celestin. One of the special features of this picture is the splendid acting of the brilliant cast. The heroine is pretty Sally , Blane, the young American star who is in reality, a sister to the popular Loretta Young. Sir Nigel Playfair is a magnificent actor from the English stage, having made but one previous screen appearance with Gloria Swanson in “The Perfect Understanding,” Lewis Casson, who plays the part of the vicar, is a particularly versatile actor, and in this picture reproduces almost perfectly the benevolence and gentle demeanour of a cleric. Phyllis Dare has been on the stage since she was eight years of age, and 4 4 Crime on The Hill” marks her screen debut. Australia’s own Judy Kelly, Anthony Bushell, Gus McNaughton, and Hal Gordon, are included, among others, who play important roles in this brilliant British film.
