THEFT OF BOOKS
GUILT ADMITTED. I ’ ’ ( Per Press Association ). DUNEDIN, Nov. 5. In the Police Court Henry Cecil Beckingsale, aged 34, City Corporation electrical inspector, admitted that in the last two years he had stolen 224 books, valued at £6l from various shops, ascribing his conduct to his fondness for books and being unable to resist the temptation of taking them. The police stated that accused would Order periodicals from different shops and call for them with a brief bag. While in the shops he would select the books he intended to steal and move them to the back of the cases and then slip them into the bag. All were books of good quality and a high standard. When his hume was searched, 550 new books were found in his possession. Counsel said that only 224 had been stolen. Accused had a substantial library of his own. He was remanded till this afternoon.
