FAMOUS BAND
TOUR OF DOMINIONS FAREWELL LUNCHEON LONDON, Sept. 1. Mr. Nevin Tait gave a farewell luncheon at the Savoy Hotel yesterday to Major George Miller, who is to take the Grenadier Guards Band to Australia and New Zealand by the Otranto, which leaves to-day. Other guests at the luncheon emphasised that the baud was the finest combination of military music in the world. Mr. Tait said he expected that the performance of the band would eclipse that of the Besses o’ the Barn Band, which filled the Dunedin Botanical Gardens with 20,000 people. The Agent-General for Western Australian, Sir Hal Colebatch, said such visits were likely to do more to promote Imperial sentiments than Premiers’ Conferences, Statutes of Westminster and Ottawa agreements. The High Commissioner for New Zealand, Sir James Parr, recalled the band’s recent triumphs in Paris, and predicted that New Zealand’s welcome would eclipse the French reception. All those present signed a replica of the Grenadier Guards’ drum. Major. Miller expressed anticipation of a delightful tour, which, he said, he hoped would cultivate Imperial amity.
