NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE

CAMPAIGN IN YORKSHIRE. VERY SUCCESSFUL MONTH. LONDON, Dec. 20. A successful month’s publicity campaign has been carried out by the New Zealand (Dairy Board simultaneously in Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield. During the first fortnight the board's four canvassers prepared the ground and invited the interest of the retailers in the window displays. In Leeds, 112 retailers entered the competition; in Huddersfield 68; and in Halifax 69—a good result, in view of the near approach of Christmas. During the preparatory period posti ers are displayed inviting the public to 'buy samples at the board’s temporary shops, and newspaper advertisements invite the public to enter the “Spot the Winner” competition. In this the public have the opportunity of selecting the shop window which they consider is the prize winner. Those who “spot the winner” receive a prize. The temporary shops in both Halifax and Huddersfield were in the heart of the shopping centre; the one at Leeds, although on the outskirts of the shopping centre, was a particularly large and attractive one. The three shops were visited by the respective Mayors and Mayoresses, and complimentary speeches were made cither by Air. H. E. Davis, or his representative, the Alayoresses being presented with baskets of New Zealand produce as a memento of their co-operation in interesting the womenfolk of the district in the campaign. The Mayors, in reply, invariably made an appeal, calling on fellow townsfolk to support themselves and New Zealand by buying Dominion produce. During the fortnight the temporary shops were open a total of over 8000 butter samples and over 7000 Id cheese samples were sold in the three towns. The prize-giving ceremonies were largely attended by private traders, representatives of company shops and of co-operative stores. The prizes were distributed by the respective presidents of the Chamber of Trade in Leeds and Halifax, and by the Mayor of Huddersfield. There is no doubt that New Zealand butter is making very definite headway in this Yorkshire, area, and that the people are far more receptive to the board’s advances than they were a few years ago. The campaign will be continued in Manchester on January 14.
