PERSONAL Aliss Al. Davidson leaves to-day for Upper Hutt, Wellington, where will be the guest of Airs 11. Findlay, Bank of Australasia House, for the Christmas holidays. Alisscs B. AlcCarty, and R. Harris are joining several girls friends in Hawera and arc planning to spend the holiday season camping at Atokau. Air R. C. Rutherford left last Friday for Dunedin. Air A. W. Alilliken, who has been a student at the Auckland University College during the past years, will commence duties in Mr F. W. Hamel’s office as managing clerk after the New’ Year. Air Alilliken is well-known in Rugby ci ivies, having played as a New Zealand as well as an Auckland representative player. His reputation as a footballer will afford him a very hearty welcome in Patea. Aliss Aileen Horner, of New Plymouth, will spend Christmas in Patea, and will arrive to-morrow to be the guest of Miss G. Taylor. Mrs AL Ballard, of Wellington, will bo in Patea. for Christmas and will stay with her daughter, Airs T. E. Roberts. Alaster Harold Sheild has returned homo after his final year’s study at Wellington Boys’ College. Mr and Airs Bargrovc and family loft last Saturday for the south where they will spend the Christmas holidays. Airs Holmes arrived In Patea yesterday to join her husband. Air P. Holmes, who is managing the freezing works for the present busy season. Afr and Airs Herbert and family are spending the holiday season at their beach cottage. Air and Airs Corbett of Suva, are staying with their daughter, Airs Herbert, and will return to Silva after the New Year. Air and Mrs Bean intend returning to Suva also when Airs Bean’s parents return. Afr Clarke, of the Bank of New South Wales’ relieving staff, is acting manager in place of Air Herbert during the. latter’s annual leave. TENNIS Owing to the inability of the Alanaia Club to form a full team on Saturday, the B grade match that was to have been played at Patea was defaulted. Patea Club players, however, spent a busv time and the games in the ladies’ and men’s doubles were played out almost to the finals. In the semifinal of the men’s doubles, G. Corbett and AL C. Wybournc defeated Whitehead and Still by a good margin, the former pair playing a splendid game. Corbett and Wybourne will now meet C. Harris and Keys. In the ladies’ doubles, one semi-fiual-ist pair are Airs Corbett and Aliss C. Davidson, while Alisscs I. Svenson and J. Spurdlc win by default from Misses G. Taylor and AL Davidson. The fourts on Saturday were hard and play was correspondingly fast, but the rain which fell on Sunday and Monday morning was very welcome, as the grass was drying up badly, and in need of water. With a little more rain the courts should be in excellent condition during the holidays. I WHENUAKURA SCHOOL BREAK-UP Prizes for the year’s work were distributed by Airs F. Parsons at the Whcnuakura School last Friday afternoon after an enjoyable tea had been partaken of by the pupils. Following arc the winners of prizes: Special prize for sewing: E. Handley. Senior calf-rearing: Ethel Cousins and B. Booker 1, N. Prout 2, F. Parsons and B. Kiihfuss 3. Junior •calf-rearing: Peter Parsons 1, Al. Handley 2. Root crops: —Swedes, N. Prout; carrots, F. Parsons; mangolds, W. Waterland. CRICKET In lhe second round of the country cricket clubs’ competition, some decisive wins were recorded. Alton won from Whcnuakura by an innings and 58 runs, Whcnuakura making 29 and 25, while Alton made 112, of whivh J. Archer scored 48 and F. Taylor 30. Kakaramea suffered defeat also at the hands of Alercmere, who recorded a win by a large score in their first innings, Kakaramea being defeated by a two-point victory. Alokoia defeated Alanutahi tiy a similarly large margin, Alanutahi failing to gain sufficient in a second innings to reduce Alokoia’s win from an innings and 30 runs.
