FARMERS CAUGHT
STOP BANK GIVES WAY FLOODS WORST FOR YEARS. [ Per Press Association.] MASTERTON, Aug. 30. The floods in the Lower Valley are reported to be thc worst for many years. Many farmers wore caught napping when the Kahutara stop bank gave way, letting through an enormous volume of water with devastating effect. The Wairarapa Lake is rising steadily and this is causing settlers some anxiety as to the safety of the protective banks around the lake. The Martinborough-Feathcrston Road is under water for half-a-mi’.e at Tawaha and is closed to traffic. Slips are reported in all parts of thc Featherston County and outlying roads arc blocked. The lake outlet is open, which helps to relieve the position.
