COPYRIGHT CHARGES
STAGE ENTERTAINMENTS LEVIES ON BROADCASTING Received Aug. 30, 7.10 p.m. CANBERRA, Aug. 30. The Federal Cabinet, yielding to representations by thc broadcasting authorities, have decided to place re strictions on the Australian Performing Rights Association, which is reported to be levying heavy charges upon the broadcasting of stage enter tainments. The Government’s inquiries disclose that, during the 12 months ended Jun 6 30, the Performing Rights Associatin' received £30,000 from the Australia!* A. stations and about £15,000 ifrom the B stations for broadcasting works, of which the association claims tho copy right. It is complained that there is rto way of ascertaining whether th" Association is entitled to copyright fees in respect of any particular wor’ except by costly litigation. Cabinc' which has obtained mass information on the subject, will make its statemen f this week.
