The Commonwealth Statistician’s annual report states that the birth rate in Australia for 1931 is th c lowest recorded, being 118,509, compared with 128,339 in the previous year. Of every 1000 children born in 1931, 42 died within thc first year, which is the lowest recorded. Deaths in 1931 numbered 55,560, which is thc second lowest on record.
