Manawhenua meets Taranaki at Stratford on Thursday and Wanganui at Wanganui on Saturday next, returning home the same evening. Olliver (Manawatu) was injured in the game against Wairarapa on Saturday and was not available for the trip. The Rev. P. H. Leonard, Rangitikeihas been appointed referee for the match between Manawhenua and Wan ganui. Yesterday afternoon there was a fair muster of Wanganui players on Spriggens Park for practice. It is hoped that every player in both the Wanganui and Metropolitan teams will put in an appearance on Friday afternoon, when a final run and team tai will be undertaken.

WANGANUI AFFAIRS METROPOLITAN UNION WEEKLY MEETING HELD The Management Committee of the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union met last night, Mr. J. Moye presiding. There were also present Messrs T. Hurley, L. Southcombe, H. Whiting, A. Takarangi, A. Danielson and H. Dyke. A verba] message was received from the Rangitikei Union advising that September 24 would not suit them for a Pownall Trophy match. They suggested September 7. Mr. Moye said that it was desirable that the match should be put on. He had approached several players and found that September 7 suited the best of them. It was very pleasing to find how the players were responding. The talent approached was of a quality that suggested that a strong side could be got away. It was decided to accept the date suggested (September 7) and Mr. J. Moye was appointed manager of the Wanganui team. The matter of sending a team to play Wairoa at Waitotara was discussed, the difficulty encountered being the lack of Saturdays in which to finalise the complicated Metropolitan Senior Cup competition. Mr. Moye reported that September 17 would suit Wairoa, but on that date, in addition to sending the representative team to Hawke’s Bay, the Metropolitan Union might have to play club matches. Mr. Danielson thought that it would be better to play the Charity Cup on September 17 rather than club matches. After considering ways and means of meeting Wairoa’s wishes, it was decided to defer arrangements until after the Metropolitan matches on September 10, when the Senior Cup competition should be more clarified.

Technical Old Boys were granted permission to take their third grade players to New Plymouth on September 10. The Pirate Club were granted No. 2 Racecourse ground on which to play Kia Toa (Manawatu) on Saturday next. Players’ passes were left to the secretary and Mr. Southcombe was deputed to arrange about a referee. Mr. H. Tyler, manager of the fourth grade team that played and beat Rangitikei at Marton on Saturday last, was congratulated on the team’s behalf and a vote of thanks passed to man ager and players for their effort. . The knotty problem of arranging the next block of fixtures in the Senior Cup was discussed. Mr. Danielson, chairman of the Fixtures Committee, recommended Old Boys v. Kaierau; Technical Old Boys v. Pirates; Marist a bye. Mr. Dyke said that under those conditions Kaierau would have to stand down until October 1 before getting another game. Mr. Danielson pointed out that the Fixtures Committee had the power to arrange the matches, but wanted a guide. Mr. Moye said that by putting on that block of matches it would be the biggest day in club Rugby of the season. He suggested that Yoth matches be made late matches. If the first match started at 2.15 p.m., the second could kick off at 3.40 p.m., and finish at 5.5 p.m. It might, be possible to arrange a short curtain-raiser featuring the primary school representatives. Several members thought that by starting at 2.15 it was too late. Two o’clock would be a better time for the first match. Mr. Whiting suggested that a fifth grade representative team be played against the primary schools in the curtain-raiser.

It was finally decided to start the curtain-raiser at 1.15 p.m., the first Cup match at 2 p.m. and the second at 3.25 p.m. and to recommend the block of fixtures as suggested—Kaierau v. Old Boys; Technical Old Boys v. Pirates; Marist a bye. Mr. Moye is to suggest to Mr. F. C. Jannings that the primary school representatives play a fifth grade representative team. With regard to the Pownall Trophy match with Rangitikei to-day week it was decided to ask the sole selector (Mr. Crowley) to announce in to-mor-row morning’s paper the names of the players required to travel to Marton. The honorary secretary was instructed to suggest to the Rangitikei Union that the match bo started later than 2.45 p.m. on account of difficulty experienced in assembling and transporting Wanganui players to Marton in readiness for an earlier kick-off. Mr. H. W. Cooper was in attendance and was accorded a cordial welcome by those present. He said that nothing had given.him greater pleasure than to have heard of Wanganui’s two victories in the field recently. He hoped they would be the forerunners of others, and that Wanganui was at last shaking off its unnecessarily pessimistic outlook. He had never been pessimistic. He congratulated the selectors (Messrs. Crowley, Southcombe aud Henwood) on their teams. Mr. Southconibe: It was nbt so much the selectors ? q the players.

It was reported by Mr. Southcombe that Mr. G. Thrush had been appointed referee for the Metropolitan match with VYainui-a-rua next Saturday, and Mr. Kearney for tho junior Charity Cup match on the racecourse.

RANGITIKEI UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS SEVERAL CHALLENGES ACCEPTED A meeting of the Management Committee of the Rangitikei Rugby Union was held last night when the following members were present: Messrs. A. T. Gatrcll (chair), C. E. Vile, A. Gracie, F. Haywood, A. S. Coleman. S. Abel, K. A. Williams, Rev. P. H. Leonard. A challenge was accepted from the Wanganui Metropolitan Union for the Pownall Trophy. It was suggested that the match be played on Saturday, September 24, but the committee decided that Wednesday, September 7 would be preferable. Mr. A. T. Gatrell was appointed as manager of the Rangitikei team. A challenge was also accepted from the Utiku juniors, winners of the Taihape junior competition, for tho McKee Cup, held by the Marton Old Boys. The match will be played on Wednesday, September 21, at Marton. Pirates, winners of the senior championship at Taihape, challenged for the President’s Rose Bowl, held by Rata. The match will be played on Wednesday, September 14, at Marton. The explanation of the Ohingaiti Club as to the inability to play their junior fixture on July 27 was accepted. The Athletic and Bulls Clubs are to be asked as to their reason for not playing their fixtures on that date. As a reply to a request from the Halcombe Club as to the definition of the union’s boundaries at Halcombe it was decided to send a copy of the rules. A letter was received from the. Taihape Union stating that it would be unable to enter a team to play for the Maori Shield. Championship winners for the season were reported as follows:—Seniors: Rata; juniors: Marton Old Boys; thirds: Marton Athletic. Notification was received that the Rev.
