PROBLEM OF THE OATH
ATTITUDE OF FREE STATE THE TENDENCY IN CANADA A WHITE PAPER ISSUED Received Alarch 31, 8.40 p.m. NEW YORK, March 30. The New York Times’ Ottawa cor respondent states that although the Government has not intimated to De Valera that if the oath of allegiance is abolished the Free State will not be invited to the Imperial Conference, th© Government unexpectedly issued a White Paper elaborately setting out the Free State’s obligations in respect to the oath and also land annuities, th© only apparent purpose for which was to prepare the public mind for tlrfe action contemplated should De Valera repudiate the oath. In lieu of tho definite Governmentstatement the prevailing attitude is that if the Free State repudiates membership of the British Empire it has place at the council table th© Empire Conference and will bo permitted there if Canada’s protest is uphchl. It is understood that the Government has consulted CamJL a nu other Dominions regarding develop ments in the Free State. ▼
