THREE FINGERS LOST

ENGINEER AT AERODROME HAND STRUCK BY PROPELLER AUCKLAND, Feb. 9. As he was reaching for an apple resting on the wing of a Gipsy Moth aeroplane at the Mangere aerodrome early yesterday morning, Mr. R. L. 1 Copley, ground engineer to the Auckland Aero Club met with a serious accident to his left hand, which was struck by the whirling propeller. Three lingers were severely injured and were later amputated. Mr. Copley had just wheeled out a machine from the hangar and had swung the propeller. The engine started, and as Mr. Copley stretched out his hand to get tire apple he had placed on the wing he misjudged the distance and was struck. He was admitted to hospital, where the operation was performed.
