EMPIRE TRADE
CANADA AND AUSTRALIA A SERIES OF AGREEMENTS. Received Dec. 14, 8.30 p.m OTTAWA, Dec. 13. In the next trade agreement between Australia and Canada, a formula is in view upon which a comprehensive scheme of inter-Empire trade preferences may be based, according to a statement to-day made by Messrs Stevens and Maloney, addressing the Board of Trade at a luncheon in honour of Mr Maloney. Mr Stevens said: “I believe this will be the forerunner of a series of agreements which will achieve what we failed to achieve at the Imperial Conference. One thought is uppermost. How can we so direct our trade so that we can buy more goods from Australia. We believe we are close to a formula which will succeed in that purpose.” Mr Maloney said: “If we arc getting outside the Empire which we can got from Canada, we feel we should get it from you.” He said that the previous trade agreement had not worked very satisfactorily, either for Canada or Australia. ‘‘There should be nothing to stand in the way of a new agreement, which should be mutually advantage OUS.”
Mr Maloney corrected the report attributing to him a statement that Australia provided excellent opportunities for immigrants. At present migration was being discouraged Immigrants were not desired until the depression had passed and the problems in the way of land settlement were solved.
