WANGANUI MATCHES

PLAY ON SATURDAY RAIN CAUSES ABANDONMENT Before Saturday’s matches under the Aanganui Cricket Association’s competitions had been under way two hours heavy rain at 3.40 p.m. caused play to cease, and with weather conditions continuing the reverse of agreeable, it was decided to abandon play for the day. In the senior grade two matches were being played on Cook’s Gardens and a third on the Collegiate ground. The only team to get a complete in-

nings finished was Old Boys, who hit up 106 against United, more than half vAe score resulting from the efforts of (McDougal. Hitting out lustily and treating the bowling with little respect, McDougal secured three “sixers” and several fours, finishing up with 58 runs to his credit before being caught and bowled by Marsh. That he was the mainstay of the Old Boys’ batting strength on the day was evident from the fact that Gee was the only other batsman to reach double figures, his contribution being 12. Gilmour shaped nicely for 8, while Bullock Douglas, who had done so well in the previous match for Old Boys, had only scored a single when he failed to survive a legbefore appeal off Holland. The latter came out with the best figures among the United trundlers, taking six wickets at a cost of 34 runs, while Wood got two for 44. Marsh, who dismissed McDougal, had only two runs scored off him. Technical College, batting in their match with Technical College Old Boys, had lost two wickets when rain caused play to be abandoned, the total to their credit at that stage being 59 runs. J. Mete Kingi had batted well for 21 before being bowled by Inglis, who secured Davidson’s wicket also to come out with the average of two for 21. Lauvata and Gregory, 6 and 17 not out respectively, were associated at the I wickets when the downpour came. Both were shaping well. The match between Collegiate School and Wanganui on the Collegiate ground had reached the stage at which School’s last wicket appeared likely to fall, nine wickets being down for 59 runs. Hobbs Lad been the means of placing 19 of these on the board, while Marshall was the only other batsman to get as high as 10. Bowling honours were fairly well distributed among the Wanganui trundlers, for Grant took four wickets for 16 runs, Williams two for 15, Wild one for none, and W. Thrush one for 1(». while Spurdle ami Evans also took a hand in the attack. The following are the details of the •cores: — OLD BOYS AND UNITED Old Boys. First Innings.
