Mr Will Jamieson, managing director of the Grand Theatre, is visiting Wellington.

Mr H e C. Hassall returned yesterday from Dunedin where he attended a managers’ and directors’ conference of the D.I.C.

A London cable states that it is understood that Sir Dudley De Chair’s term as Governor of New South Wales has been extended to April.

Guests at Foster’s Hotel include— Messrs P. Coyle, J. McDonald, Captain and Mrs Fraser (Wellington), Messrs G. Arkinstall, W. Brian (Auckland), F. Drummond and J. Fletcher (Hunterville).

Mr and Mrs J. W. Bailey leave Wanganui on December 23. They will broadcast items from Station 2YA on December 27, and after a stay in Christchurch, will arriv e in Auckland at the beginning of February .

The Hon. W. A. Veitch, Minister of Mines, Labour and Transport is to pay a short visit to Wanganui. He will arrive here about mid-day on Friday and will leave again on Sunday evening for Rotorua.

Mrs William McLeod, Sydney, widow of the late Mr-W. MacLeod, proprietor of the Bulletin, reached New Plymouth yesterday from the Waitomo Caves. Mrs MacLeod, who is a New Zealander will go to Opunake to.day to stay with her brother, Air A. O’Brien. She will spend some weeks in the Dominion to recruit her health. In Australia Mrs MacLeod was well known as a writer and contributed short stories to the Bulletin and the Australasian.

Mr A. Shedton, chief postmaster at New Plymouth, has been appointed to succeed Mr A. Dawson, as chief postmaster, Palmerston North. Mr Shelton, who was formerly superintendent of mails, Wellington, and on the inspection staff for some years, is well known in Palmerston North, having twice acted in a relieving capacity at this office, the latter occasion being three years ago when he was relieving postmaster. Mr Shelton will take up his new duties shortly.

The death has occurred of the Rev. tio Howlett, a veteran of the Maori War, and one of the best-known figures in the Northern Wairoa at the age of 84. Mr Howlett was born in Hampwell, Worsfold, England and came to New Zealand as a young man, joining the Armed Constabulary on arrival. At the conclusion of the Maori War, in which he saw service, he entered the timber trade and was for many years a familiar figure in Hclensville and the Northern Wairoa. Later he was in the Public Works Department, from which he retired some years ago. Mr Howlett always took a keen interest in politics, and even at the last campaign followed the election closely, attending many candidates’ meetings. His wife predeceased him 14 years ago and he leaves four sons and five daughters.

The death has occurred of the Rev. W. H. Holloway who has been minister at’St. Andrew’s Church, Taneatau for nearly four years. Mr Holloway was 66 years of age. He left England as a young man and arrived in Australia in 1882. Twenty years later he came to New Zealand and was engaged in Presbyterian home mission work in North Auckland for several years. He carried on the arduous work by travelling long distances with a horse and buggy over bad roads. He was so successful in hfs mission work that ten years ago he was selected to tour New Zealand to raise funds for the home mission. He succeeded in raising £ll,OOO. During his period at Taneatau Mr Holloway won the esteem ot the whole community. He leaves a widow and two sisters, Mrs Andrews, of New Lynn and Mrs Zimmerman, of Tauranga.
