Ward was appointed as the League’s representative on the proposed central executive. Busy Inspectors. The City inspectors have been busily engaged during the past few weeks in examining dairies, soda fountain and ice cream depots. Yesterday, a dozen samples of fruit juices from bulk supplies sold over the counter to the public were forwarded to Wellington for laboratory tests. Grass Fires. The Central Fire Brigade received two calls to gras 3 fires yesterday afternoon. The first occurred at one o’clock, at the railway crossing in College Street, and thg second near the railway bridge in Ridgway Street. No damage resulted, and the outbreaks were quickly subdued. A £5OO Grant. The secretary of the Wanganui Automobile Association (Mr F. J. Hill) said yesterday that a £5OO grant had been made by the Government for the improvement of the Waiouru-Tokaanu Road. It was intended to have this in & good state of repair for the ap proaching holiday season. New Bank Building.

The scaffolding on the new National Bank premises in Victoria Avenue has been removed from the front portion, and the structure presents a striking appearance. The massive columns guarding the main entrance are unique so far as Wanganui is concerned, and the coloured stone work of th e building presents an unusual contrast.

Road and Footpath Improvements. During the past week employees of the Wanganui City Council have been engaged in carrying out extensive repairs to the road and footpaths leading to the Sarjeant Art Gallery, from Victoria Avenue. The footpaths are being re-conditioned and concrete culverts have been constructed. The roadway is being metalled and rolled. Injured While Blasting. As the result of a premature explosion during blasting operations at Maxwell yesterday morning, George Hoskins, a married man residing at Kowhai Street, Castlecliff, was admitted to the Wanganui Public Hospital. He suffered extensive injuries to head, face and forearms. On inquiry at the hospital last night, his condition was reported as satisfactory. Road Information. The Wanganui Automobile Association is taking steps to have earlv advice prepared of road conditions throughout New Zealand so that members may avail themselves of it in preparing their Christmas holiday itinerary. “I venture to say that there is no place in New Zealand where there is less closer settlement than Wanganui,” said the president of the Wanganui Development League at last night’s meeting. Mr Roberts: Do we want the people who are on the land to stay there or do we want more people on the land. If we had two or three hundred more on about Wanganui the country might be farmed better in some placesj in others it might not.. It would certainly benefit the district.

A Change of Name. There was an attendance of about 30 members at a meeting of the Wanganui Professional Musician’s Society held on Monday evening. An altera tion in the Society’s name was effect od and it will now be known as the New Zealand Society of Professional Musicians (Wanganui branch). Miss Richman and Mr C. G. O. A member of the Wanganui Development League stated at last night s meeting that the route which it was intended the road to the Landguard Bluff Airport should follow, led from Wikitoria Road to the high land, then over a saddle near the day bank where th e bluff commences, and, from there, to the port on the far side. It was not surveyed for the foreshore, as had been reported. The meeting expressed approval of a route along the top of the bluff and the consensus of opinion seemed to be against taking the lower level. '‘You will destroy a beautiful grandstand if you take the road along the river,” one member remarked. It was stated that the Public Works Department was pushing ahead with the road as quickly as possible.

Caught In the Act. The reference in yesterday’s issue regarding charges against six men who were found gambling at Aramoho contained the name of John Harper. This should have read John Harrison.
